Hi bob,

I was admiring Mac's latest OS. Tried it out and it is, from a visual point of view quite nice (maybe even better than Vista). I refrain from making a definitive distinction between which Syatem has better graphics since I only have Vista  Home Basic (no Aero theme).
Concerning the legality of using Mac OS on a non Mac computer, can a software company really make such a rule? I mean, if you bought the license for the software, why would they obligate you to use the OS on a high end computer that only they sell?

Thanks.
Computer Systems:

Intel Pentium 4 641 / 2GB RAM / Vista Home Basic SP2 / avast! 5.0 Home / SAS Free / MBAM Free / Windows Defender / Windows Firewall / Spyware Blaster/ Secunia PSI / Firefox 3.6 / Opera 10.5

Core2Duo T8300 / 4GB RAM / Vista Home Premium SP2 (32 bit version) / Same Software.

As far as I'm concerned, It's call a monopoly which has cost Microsoft millions.

I'm sure that Mac will have a few words to say on that subject which totally differs from my interpretation.  ;D ;D ;D

Apple mega-patch covers 34 Mac OS X security issues

Zdnet overreacting as usual. The so called Mega-patch is just one of Apple's maintenance releases very similar to Microsoft's Service Packs. The 10.5.4 update was release in June, so this covers all issues found since that time.

There are lots of non-securty related fixed in this update as well.

Its a very controversial subject. Apple maintains that they can make the rules since its their OS. Just like Microsoft and Sony dont allow their game console OS to run on other consoles. Rumor even has it that apple is looking to go to some proprietary chipset (still use intel processors just a different chipset) to help prevent the OS to be installed on machines without this chipset.

If its a monopoly then lots of companies will be open to lawsuits. Example if the court rules that Apple has a monopoly it would open Companies like Sony, Nintendo, Motorola, virtually any company with a proprietary OS to lawsuits.

like why cant i run the PS3 OS on my own system I built? Or Why Cant I run Motorola's cell phone OS on my non-motorola phone? Anyone that has a Operating system that is restricted to certain hardware.

We will know in a few months the results of the psystar court case.

Hi Mac,

Your answer is very straight forward but I kind of disagree with your comparison between Game Console OSs and Computer OSs. Usually with computers, you don't buy just the hardware you actually pay the Software as well.

For PCs, the Software is a separate and unique entity. I can download Vista from almost anywhere. That is not necessarily the issue for Microsoft. As long as you have purchased the Serial Key, then you have the right of usage for that software. I doubt that Bill Gates cares too much how you get the software as long as you have paid the proprietary rights.

Game consoles are not necessarily the same. Of course here there is the issue that PS3 is almost a computer compared to the old Nintendo consoles. This further complicates things. Because I don't know how game consoles works I am not sure how to word my explanation. An issue with Console OSs is that I'm not certain if they have a way of authenticating the OS. If this is not possible  then they would have no way of insuring that the user pays the usage rights. And this can be a major factor in companies.
Does Mac require serial keys? What happens if The software "is not free of errors or defects"?

I'm curious to see the court's decision on this issue.

I see your point. It will be interesting to see the court ruling, and hopefully it will settle the debate :).

No Mac OS X does not have any serial key or validation procedure. The only thing keeping a user from using a single copy on 20 machines is honesty.  If the software is not free of errors or defects, you call and complain to Apple and hope they fix it (Which I have done a few times over the years, although not nearly as many calls as ive made to HP).

Apple Recalls iPhone 3G Power Adapters

If you have an iPhone 3G, you can fill out the form online to have a new one shipped to you or you can take the defective one to a Apple Retail Store.

Well ... Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-10048142-56.html?part=rss&subj=news&tag=2547-1_3-0-20 --> Win7 may un-bundle many long-lived (and almost majority unused) apps from their OS.

What I think: MS should unbundle them, i.e. make them not part of the default install. What they should do: integrate Windows Live product installers (the absolute better options) and allow user to check them in or out ;) .

Mac.
I know frompersonal experience that you can order your Dell without any crap.
My laptop came with only the operating system installed..... Nothing else because that's
what I stipulated when I ordered it.
Totally de-crapafied...  ;D ;D

WebKit becomes first browser engine to fully pass Acid3 Test

As you know WebKit is the engine behind Apple's Safari and Internal builds of safari 4.0 also pass the Acid 3 Test.

Also remember that WebKit was the first engine to pass the Acid2 test as well.
