It seems the platform update for win 7 (KB2670838) is causing some people to have problems.

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_update/after-installation-of-update-kb2670838-win-7-keeps/66be9f5a-2257-4c4a-9c9c-5dc6f0f55d37?page=1&tm=1362433208906
It looks like the problem is happening on laptops with Intel CPU's and using the integrated Intel graphics. The platform update did change both 2D and 3D graphics and integrated some of the newer DX11 features that Intel graphics do not support. That may be the root of the problem.

Not the end of XP, just the end of support. It will still run perfectly well for years to come. :)

Rather depends on the user, mine isn't insecure or full of holes :P

Any OS not kept up to date with little or no proactive measures (a robust backup and recovery strategy) and good security applications, etc. etc. is no less vulnerable.

David,
If MS no longer updates newly discovered security flaws in XP, then XP will become vulnerable unless someone else steps in to fill the security gap.

Update are through to April 2014, so no rush.

Even when it does come in all honesty it probably won't make that much difference (certainly not to me), there are people who get infected with monotonous regularity no matter what OS they have. There have long been security holes and exploits (even those discovered by MS) that remained open for some considerable time, there are still unpatched vulnerabilities.

I have for a very long time taken responsibility for my systems security in the pro active measures I take, the security software I use, the habits and practices I follow and in all of that time not one single alert/infection in all of that time. It is quite possible to secure your system no matter what OS you have it isn't your all doomed.

I won't be rushed into any decision, Had I not bought a netbook then I probably wouldn't have win7 either and win8 I was actually looking forward to. But that turned out to impress me even less than win7, so I may well be waiting for win9 a.k.a. windows blue, to see if reality lives up to the usual MS hype.

Hell how knows my next OS update could be Linux or even Android or Firefox. But I know one thing for sure my security practices, backup and recovery strategy will be in place to recover from any eventuality.

There is no way you can know that. That's pure speculation.

As XP does not know about SATA drives, it must be configured to run with that on install.  Many users re-installing from scratch will find that out, and then there is the issue of EIDE drives not being in production anymore, so as the pool of used/remanufactured drives depletes over time, and machines that can run XP with proper manufacturer support dwindles; it is going to die irregardless over time.

Of course, there is always Linux, so support is really not the issue; old hardware no longer in production really is.
