I just got a popup message from avast that it needed to restart my computer. After the restart I had reverted to the free edition of avast although my subscription for Avast IS should still be valid for six more months.

I tried to enter my license file but got a message saying it wasn't valid. How can I get a new valid license?

TIA

I was actually able to re-download my license through my Avast account and everything is fine now.

I am starting to wonder how this could have happened. I assumed the restart request was because of an update to the program but I see there was no new release. It seems very strange.

Glad to hear that you've solved the problem.
As to what or why it happened, I don't know. ???
