Problem with Update
« on: February 20, 2006, 08:12:02 PM »
Hi

I have been using Avast for a while now (it is great ;D).  However, it has recently developed a problem when updating. The pop up says that it can't detect any server for updating from.  I have tried disabling my firewall but to no avail.

Any thoughts?

Any help will be much appreciated!

What version of avast are you using ?
Have your Updates Expired ?
 - check about avast, and look at the Registration Key information.

If it has expired you will need to re register, avast! 4 Home Registration.

A delicate question - Where did you get your registration key from ?
 - through avast! on-line shop and Share*it payment processing ?
 - or through a reseller - if so which one ?

Not saying yours isn't legit, but there was a problem recently with bad registration keys and they fail the validity check carried out when you try to update. Those that failed couldn't update but there wasn't a message stating validation failed, just the couldn't update error.

That's the only thing I can think of as if you have disabled your firewall there shouldn't be anything to stop avast updating.
What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avast.setup full internet access ?

Can you try a manual update and record the full details or do a screenshot, this might provide more information.

I bought it from Share-it so that shouldn't be an issue.

The firewall is Lavasoft Personal Firewall - Avast is given the all clear.

My log file says "Server definition file for 'main' (D:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\servers.def) is invalid."  Should I reinstall?

I was thinking it might be servers.def being 0KB in size, if that is the case, delete it. There is also a servers.def.lkg (last known good), that to may be 0KB as that is use if there is a problem with servers.def.

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this. Then check the size of the servers.def file, mine is 7.36MB and has 52 servers listed.
