avast hang/crash Widnows XP
« on: December 29, 2016, 06:39:03 PM »
Hi all,
using the latest free version.  I get an occasional glitch, once or twice a week.
The symptom is, the mouse is moving but I can't do anything except open the task manager
with ctrl-alt-delete.  From there I can initiate a shutdown and it takes about 10 minutes.

I looked in \documents and settings\all users\application data\Avast software\Avast\log and in a file called
DumpProcess.log I see the following

[2016-12-22 20:04:29.546] [info   ] [dump       ] [ 2704: 2708] Dumpmaster is arming.
[2016-12-22 20:04:37.562] [info   ] [dump       ] [ 2704: 2708] Successfully dumped process 1240 into 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVAST Software\Avast\log\unp305634702578972880.mdmp'
[2016-12-28 19:33:50.859] [info   ] [dump       ] [ 2412: 2416] Dumpmaster is arming.
[2016-12-28 19:33:53.781] [info   ] [dump       ] [ 2412: 2416] Successfully dumped process 1160 into 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVAST Software\Avast\log\unp305646731354878292.mdmp'

Those two small mdmp's are available if necessary.  I opened them with Windbg and I see
Access violation - code c0000005

I have checked the RAM with memtest86+ but no errors have shown up

Sounds like a c++ error to me.
See if this is solving it > https://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB204

You're advising a repair?  OK I'll give it a try ...
