K9 Web Protection is an Internet filter software giving parents a way to easily protect their children online. The parental control solution is unique among adult content filters because it is based on commercial-grade Web filtering from Blue Coat Systems. K9 Web Protection has the ability to block porn or other offensive content, prevent spyware infections, and monitor visited sites on any Internet access connection (AOL, MSN, Yahoo, and SBC).
Based on the above it would depend on how the content is filtered ?

Possibly by a proxy of some sort if so then it would need to be configured so it works in co-operation with the web shield proxy, so that content that is to be filtered/blocked would be first and avast would then scan what should be downloaded after being filtered.

Efficient caching - K9 Web Protection is a product from Blue Coat. Blue Coat is recognized world-wide as expert in high-performance caching and secure proxy technology. We take advantage of that expertise in K9, so your Internet experience is as fast, reliable, and safe as we can make it.

From this it would appear it uses a proxy, although I can't see anything about how this is set-up.

Yes, it works fine together.
Bluecoat uses the same technology as Radiant Morning Technologies does: on the fly scanning at point of entry (before internet-traffic reaches webshield).
No problems with Avast! webshield at all.
Very nice program (K9).

Succes !

I am running Avast 4 home edition on a winXP pro sp2 platform with IE 7. I recently tried to install K9 by Blue Coat and my machine does not boot completely, it hangs at the starting windows screen. I had to uninstall the K9. I see someone saying that the two are compatible. Can you kindly specify the versions of both the K9 and the Avast that are working?

Thanks

I know of no incompatibility in k9 or avast versions, certainly none that have been reported in the forums, you can do a search for K9 and see if it returns any more info.

The only issue is getting the two proxy settings working together as has been stated in this Topic I believe K9 uses a proxy to filter and monitor web traffic.

Even if there were a conflict it would I believe be confined to browsing, where K9 and web Shield proxies try to filter and monitor internet traffic. It shouldn't cause the system to hang on boot so I'm at a loss as to why it might.

Hi folks,

I've been an Avast fan for a few years now and have never had a problem until recently. I installed K9webprotection, rebooted and the pc wouldn't start.

Here's the link to the K9webprotection forum article:

http://forums.bluecoat.com/viewtopic.php?t=2230&sid=62eaa90657f251f56a4def3200d88950

I have written to my contact at Blue Coat Systems and asked them to look into it so hopefully either Avast or Blue Coat will investigate, fix and release a new version that addresses this problem.

Fingers crossed eh?

I have also, just today encountered a problem with K9 webprotection.
After succesful installation, K9 prompted me to restart the pc (xp).
During the restart procedure, it asked me if I wanted to restart in safe mode or normal mode. I chose normal mode, but it just kept restarting -over and over...!

What can I do? Should I change a setting in DOS? Restart in safe mode?
Thanks in advance guys, you have always been helpful :)

Bennito, I'm running both avast and K9 without a problem since 2-3 years...
I really can't imagine what is blocking the normal booting of the computer.
Any other application that could interfere? Firewall? Old antivirus? Other filter?

Yeah, I dunno. I have been running my PC very smoothly for more than a year now and as soon as I installed this K9 software it keeps restarting itself. I'm not aware of anything that could be interfering.

I am guessing it is rebooting from another source, other than usual and this is not responding.
I will go into DOS this afternoon (as soon as I am home) and check where it is rebooting from.

Any help/thoughts would be great.
Thanks

I fixed the problem, although I still don't know what happened.
I restarted the PC in safe mode & was able to uninstall the K9 webprotection software.
Then restarted in normal mode, without a problem.

Thanks guys.

But can you install K9 again?
Maybe you can also get help on the K9 forums.

K9 gives very poor customer support

I had some problem with K9 recently, it stopped working even after reinstall

So, I contacted their support and they gave me a reply with 'Sorry for contacting you late' and they asked me to install it and uninstall it by entering a specific code in the license box which will inturn give me another code that I have to give to the support person

But he also asked me never to close the program uninstall window until he gives me another code because those codes regenerate if I close it...

He told my problem was because it did't uninstall properly and he needed that code to make it uninstall

Since, the time difference between US and UAE is vast and it is difficult for me to sleep without shutting down the system because I am afraid of fires...

I just reapplied for another license with another email and install it again

Then it started working again...

Maybe it was a fluke that it started working....

I'm going to try to install it today.
I did some system checks last night to make sure everything was stable.
I'll keep you updated.
Cheers!

Very limited database... You can easily find tons of sites that are allowed, unfortunately for those who want this protection. It's something, but very limited.
