New convert. Help!
« on: February 28, 2006, 02:06:47 AM »
 Hi guys.

I'm a new convert. Set up the Avast! home and well, it just does not work for me, and I love it. (Predicament eh?)

Namely, I have no Email. (Thunderbird.) It loads then says it is Done, but it gets nothing. Zone Alarm Free, loads in an extra 8 minutes from its original with the A*V*G free setup.

I love Avast!  It makes sense. It caugh things the other one missed after just one scan. Love the interface. Don't make me leave!

Help please. And yes, I had read 3 days' worth of FAQs and Google and so on, so I done my homework.

If this plea does not belong here, by all means let me know, as I had just registered and hope to get help here and find a new home.

 Thanks for your time!

Hello,

If I understand correctly your problem seems to be with Thunderbird not getting e-mails. I use Thunderbird fine along with avast! maybe you should check your e-mails online to see if maybe you just haven't been getting any. Also try turning off the "Internet Mail" provider. To do this right click the a icon and go to "Stop Provider" then click "Internet Mail" then check and see if Thunderbird will work.

I had turned off ALL providers. The only thing I did not do is uninstall Avast!.

I do indeed have new mail. Thunderbird does not even start, to get mail. As if it was blocked. Some stiings may be amiss here. Hope I find thyem as Avast! seems to be one fine solution.

Welcome to the forums, zetan.    :)

Like Justin, there are many here who use or have used Thunderbird without problems. Hopefully, one of them can help you soon. Until then, you might check to see if AVG was fully removed when it was un-installed. Their website may even have an un-installer to rid any left over junk files and registry entries. Many times when one av product is removed and another is installed, the remains of the old one will interfer with the new av product or even cause an incomplete install. If you find no remains from AVG, then you might also try a repair of Avast if you are using XP as the OS. The OS does make a difference along with other info about the setup on your computer. You must be connected to the internet for the Repair to work.

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > select avast anti-virus > Change/Remove > scroll down left pane to to Repair & select > click OK > follow directions and then restart your computer when the repair is finished.

I hope this helps you.    :)

zetan,

can you please advise us of the operating system you are using?

Windows XP is the operating system.

I have found the solution. Uninstalled Avast!. Then uninstalled Thunderbird, and Zonealarm free. (Rebooted a million times)  ::)

Reinstalled Avast! Reinstalled Thunderbird, and then Zonealarm free. And it worked.

Of course, it should have worked the first install, as I did nothing different. But I'm glad it worked out because I'm hooked on Avast!.

Found 3 trojans in the first sweep, that AVG thought nothing of. And it is pretty fast.

So, I'm here to stay.  :D

Glad you stuck with it, nice feeling of achievement when you get to the bottom of the problem, now you will get the benefit of avast and the avast family.
