Till when Avast will do such strange things? Protected... hmm, don't think so. Good thing is Windows Defender has stepped in, but don't know when. The EICAR test is quarantined by Windows Defender. Maybe Avast has for some reason turned off its shields but the UI and the amoeba show just okay. For a day or two i though that some update has turned on limited periodic scanning and that's why the icon is there, but when i hovered today WD said Protected. And the Avast amoeba stays just like "Hmm, i am doing my job, don't know why my white shield neighbor is here". The last time this happened was in Beta, seems that the issue is not fixed. I'll run the repair before you are able to tell me this but do something and fix it.

Maybe we're talking about this:

This means that Defender is not resident but can be used as a second opinion scanner.

Well, it is NOT running both because Avast shields were off.

No, we're talking about Avast shields turning off by itself at some point, while the amoeba and UI still shows okay. Windows Defender seems to have turned on when Avast turned off for some reason.

Edit: This forum is strange, sometimes it makes the text smaller without reason.

It is not malware, self-defense is enabled of course. I'll repair before the next restart.

Unfortunately, this new update brings up a problem under windows 10 and free version of avast, the first time since almost 10 years of use with Avast that I have a problem !...
I have this 0xc0000005 error that avoid several programs to start ! The only issue is to desinstal Avast from my computer through the safemode... :-(

I like Avast, please correct this problem with a new update, please, please, please :-)

I am encountering the same issue.

On my notebook PC (running Windows 10), NO programs would execute. All resulted in "the application was unable to start correctly 0xC0000005". I could not run the Avast UI.

I had to enter safe mode (Start button, click on Power, shift-click on Restart and choose "troubleshooting" and "start up Windows in safe mode with networking") and uninstall Avast.

I've reinstalled Avast from the Web site, and it's doing it again! The Avast UI won't start. I will be forced to uninstall Avast again (and leave it uninstalled).

I've enjoyed the free virus protection for years, so this is very disappointing.

The problem being, this topic relates to an earlier version and not the latest version 17.2.2288.

Why didn't Avast fix the size GUI size issue with the recent program update?

The only way access to cancel a scan is available to view in the window is not to have the windows toolbar at the bottom of the screen.
