Today I booted up my XP machine and Avast (free version) auto installed an update and said I had to reboot. After rebooting, the UI issue seems to have been resolved. UI loads normally and shows version 17.4.2294 release date 5/3/2017 so that release must include the fix? I haven't tried to install Avast on my Vista machine again yet.
Wouldn't hurt to boot again I think.  Glad the microfix seems to have worked.

A big problem I had after the 5/3 release update, Generic host process for Win32 services was using 100% CPU all the time. After a few reboots, Windows Update (which rarely updates anything on XP) did 3 Office 2007 updates then CPU use returned to normal. The same thing happened around the previous (UI failed to load) Avast update. So others reporting high CPU use may want to double check for Windows updates. Here's more info I found from 2016 and I'm glad the Windows updates showed up and I didn't need to do this stuff http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/how-to-fix-avast-antivirus-high-cpu-usage.788891/

Personally I wouldn't have been following what was in a topic that was over a year old as many things change, not least your AV, but OS and other installed applications. The main thing I would say would be to do a custom install and only install the components that you need/want. The current avast 17.x.xxxx makes this relatively easy to do a custom install and that also allows you to do a Minimal Install and that is very minimal, only two shields I believe.

Updating via GUI to new Avast Free Antivirus 17.1.2286 on Windows Vista Home Premium SP2, after computer restart, Avast Free Antivirus is unable to run.

Black screen with the error ". This is really embarrasing. AV service is not responding."

Before updating to 17.1.2286 Avast Free Antivirus was perfectly running on teh same computer, same environment.

Any idea?

Avast UI Failed to load

I don't know if you solved this problem, but maybe this will work for others...

Try this before uninstalling, reinstalling, cleaning in Safe Mode, etc....

1: Open Control Panel, go to Add or Remove Programs, click on Avast - Change/Uninstall - Click Change

2: A new window will open, choose Repair

3: Wait until Avast make necessary settings

4: When it's over, in that window will appear a green button  DONE

5: IMPORTANT : Don't click on it (DO NOT CLICK GREEN BUTTON "DONE"!!!), don't touch anything there, don't apply, DON'T DO ANYTHING, just press Start button from taskbar  and click on Restart your Computer.

6: Wait until machine restart, system is loaded and Avast icon appear in Taskbar. After that click on orange Avast icon from taskbar and see if Avast interface is loading.

After SEVERAL installing and uninstalling (8 times), Safe Mode cleaning, Program Update (and
other stuffs recommended fom others on internet), nothing worked, Avast UI failed to load
again and again. I don't have this problem on my Win 7 or Win 10 computers, so I don't know
if what I have done will work on that OS's...
Well, now it's working, and this is all I can say.

 ( My old machine:  Acer Travelmate 2410 / WINDOWS XP PRO x86 / 1 GB Ram /Intel Celeron M 1.5 GHz processor, Avast Free Antivirus 17.4.2294 (build 17.4.3482.0) )
  Good luck everyone!

Hi,
I think I've found the reason and the solution! I did not have a terminal service. After the inclusion in the properties and the launch it all worked! :)

WinXP SP3, Motherboard GA-C1007U, CPU Intel® Celeron® Processor 1007U (2M Cache, 1.50 GHz), RAM 4Gb
Avast 17.4.2274

Some with Windows XP SP3 have found Terminal Services will not start. For a possible solution to this see my post at:

I downloaded and tried to install Avast on my Vista machine again hoping the current version would work. The UI showed up for a bit then the mouse pointer and Windows froze up before I could start any program so I had to do another system restore. Did multiple reboots before and after and thought Avast was gone after the restore but it showed back up so I deep uninstalled it with IObit Uninstaller (maybe this was in safe mode as I couldn't run Uninstaller at first because I couldn't start any programs).

Any ideas to get it working? I tried Avast repair with the old version. Might try again with the new one but so far it looks like I won't be able to open control panel etc. because things lock up before Windows finishes loading startup programs and the hard drive settles down. Maybe it will work in safe mode.

During system restore I discovered that my automatic daily system restore points stopped being created after this one: "4/15: Uninstall: Avast Free Antivirus restore point." So it looks like uninstalling Avast on 4/15 somehow broke those. SR looks good in task manager but I did uncheck the 10 minutes box. Waited 12 hours, rebooted and it's creating daily restore points again.

Strange to see that the « UI failed to load » issue has not attracted more analysis of the problem.
Please consider the following aspects :
1°   Both AVG users  AND AVAST users complain for exactly the same problem with the same error screen.  What do they have in common ?
2°   Repair, deletion and reinstallation procedures  of the antivirus don’t  fix the problem
My opinion is that it is more related to Windows than on AVG/AVAST .
To verify this assumption, I have restored Windows 8 from an earlier restore point (in my case one month before the problem appeared), then updated Windows to the current position.  Finally I uninstalled AVAST and then reinstalled it. And it is working fine now…

1)
They are both avast and are using a lot of the same components.

2)
What will solve the problem depends on multiple factors.
E.G. If someone is using XP it can be that the terminal services are not running.

This thread is a few months old but the same problem popped up on my HP ENVY Notebook a few weeks ago. I have been nursing it along by continually restarting the service while I search for a fix. Sometimes it runs for hours and other times it dies every 5 minutes.

I have a stable Windows 10 Home version 1607 OS Build 14393.1198

I'm not sure what the version number was for Avast when this problem started a few weeks ago, but I after running the Repair option to no avail I completely uninstalled it using Revo Uninstaller to remove every trace of Avast, and on 6/07/2017 I re-installed the latest version 17.4.22.94 Build 17.4.3482.0  (Virus definitions version: 170609-4)

I have run sfc/scannow a couple of times.

The. Problem. Still. Exists.

Any ideas?

So, this is what happened for me.

#1. Support didn't come through ultimately. They did not directly respond to my ticket I filed online, other than the initial "help is on its way". After waiting 2 weeks or so, I made a phone call. They said my ticket was apparently locked up as a billing issue (I did not report a billing issue, but a technical support issue), and they had no ability to see it.
#2. On the phone, they made some generic suggestions all of which I had already tried. They filed a new ticket for the phone call.
#3. Because of WannaCry, I decided to doublecheck some things. I then realized, my Windows 8.1-x64 Lenovo laptop had never taken system updates, and that updating did not work.
#3a. I tried updating using some powershell scripts I found on technet and that was a total fail. (IMHO, PowerShell has a lot of good things about it but onboarding into proficiency is needlessly difficult).
#3b. googled "windows 8.1 security update online catalog" then clicked on "KB4012213", then "March, 2017 Security Only Quality Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB4012213)". Installed it, rebooted.
#4. Avast (same bits as before), now installed and ran perfectly well. I informed avast TS that I believed they had a compatibility with stock windows 8.1, but whatever.
#5. No complaints since then, in fact I'm paying for two avast licenses. But I was disappointed at the quality of technical support.

It takes currently +/- 15 business days before a ticket is handled.
You did not call avast but a third party and they can't see the tickets (afaik).

The third party is advertised by Avast on their site. It's therefore Avast's responsibility if they don't do their job.
I would have fired them a long time ago. :)
