Thanks for the comments and insight on how my support was handled. That's good information that a third party is involved.

I doublechecked the dates; my online ticket was filed May 9; my phone call to them was June 2. At least 24 day gap.

Turnaround was total 6 weeks, for not getting good help. Though as I said it appears to work fine now.

Avast UI Failed to load

Try this before uninstalling, reinstalling, cleaning in Safe Mode, etc....

1: Open Control Panel, go to Add or Remove Programs, click on Avast - Change/Uninstall - Click Change

2: A new window will open, choose Repair

3: Wait until Avast make necessary settings

4: When it's over, in that window will appear a green button  DONE

5: IMPORTANT : Don't click on it (DO NOT CLICK GREEN BUTTON "DONE"!!!), don't touch anything there, don't apply, DON'T DO ANYTHING, just press Start button from taskbar  and click on Restart your Computer.

6: Wait until machine restart, system is loaded and Avast icon appear in Taskbar. After that click on orange Avast icon from taskbar and see if Avast interface is loading.

I tried it on my PC (VISTA 32bits) and it did work! Great.

However, when navigating on the web, I found out that I was often blocked, as if the web Server at the other end was not responding.
This happened with different sites, and different browsers.
I restored my PC to the previous AVAST version (no other change) and these problems disappeared.
Makes me think that this AVAST version is definitively not able to work correctly with VISTA (I installed it on a Windows 7 computer, everything was OK).

Any similar experience?
Not installing the latest AVAST version: does it put my computer at risk?

Feedback welcome!

That's almost like asking if changing from Windows 10 back to Windows XP puts you at risk :)
Lots of that depends on how you use your system.

Difference with the W10/XP example is that AVAST still gets the updates of the virus definitions DB, although the latest version of the program is not installed.
Hence my question.

There are certain functions that aren't available in older versions of both your OS and your AV.
Even XP received updates after the last attack. That still doesn't give it the ability to protect you as well as the latest version.

Hi all

I was able to successfully install AVAST 17.5.2302 on my VISTA 32bits PC thanks to the information in this forum.

However, when navigating on the web, I found out that I was terribly slowed down or blocked, as if AVAST was doing a huge amount of work, or was engaged in a loop, when controlling some web pages. This happened with many different sites, and with different browsers.
I can prove it because if I deactivate the AVAST Web agent for testing, everything is back to normal.

I was able to restore my PC to AVAST 17.4.2294 and these problems disappeared. :)
Unfortunately, a few days later, AVAST was automatically upgraded to 17.5.2302. My problems are back  and I am not able to restore 17.4.2294 a second time because my old restore point is gone,  and 17.4.2294 is not available anywhere on the web. :(

I am not blaming AVAST as a company because Vista is not officially supported anymore.
However, I would like to understand if this is happening for all Vista 32 bits users, of if this is specific to me because of an unknown non-AVAST related issue.

Therefore, could persons in this forum who successfully installed AVAST 17.5.2302 on VISTA 32bits kindly let me know:
  • Is it working normally for you, or do you experience the same issues as I do with response time?
  • If you experience similar issues, did you find any workaround other than migrating out of VISTA?

Thanks for your help

Known issue on Vista. It should help to disable HTTPS scanning in the web shield.

I keep getting this error message every sense the update. Black screen with the error "UI Failed to load. This is really embarrassing. AV service is not responding."  I tried everything to the letter to fix this issue to no avail. I tried the repair option. No dice. I rebooted. No dice. I also did a clean install, again No dice. This has something to do with windows 10 (Creator's Update)

Avast please fix you bleepin' AV!

It was mentioned on another part of the forum that the July Windows update effected Avast. Avast and Microsoft are working on resolving the issue that effects some systems.

Well, it is now 08/18/2017, and the following still happens:

"UI Failed to load.  This is really embarrassing.  AV Service is not responding"

Available Choices are:     Exit      Restart Service

Clicking "Restart Service" generates the same result of "UI failed to load" sometimes, yet
intermittently it restarted the service.
Rebooting the computer sometimes results in actually re-starting Avast (AIS), but not
reliably.   (In the last 10 years, I think, UI has NEVER failed to load.  I also think that at least
10,000 to 20,000 users of Avast are affected by this, given that only a small percentage takes the
time to report on the usually not very effective user forum.)

Another message I see is:
"Avast is down"
"Something has gone wrong, and we are unable to protect you. Please try restarting your Avast".

Clicking Restart on this one occasion results in restarting the service about 3 out of 5 times, but
it does not stay up reliably.  Interestingly, at this exact point I have observed AVAST Internet
Security "starting itself up again, without any user input whatsoever", only to stop working 20 minutes later.
Does that tell anything to someone who knows something?

The whole thing reminds me of the "Win 95" and "Windows Vista" debacles.  I would like to go
back to a prior version that still worked.  But not even this is made available by Avast.
I also recall having had "permissions troubles" caused by the "07-11-2017 Microsoft Security
updates".  These prevented me from accessing my files, and from doing simple things such
as "Saving a MS Word file after editing, because everything became 'read-only' for no good
reason.  I uninstalled ALL the offending MS security updates, complained to MSFT and received
the usual ZERO ANSWER from the good folks at MSFT.

I am now asking anyone in the know here, whether "permissions" in Win 7, that have been
messed up by MSFT itself, could cause this weird AVAST behavior?  Anyone?

-----

My Users\User\Appdata\Local\Temp\_avast_  folder is empty.  QU:  Should it be empty?
I ask because temp folders are GENERALLY filled with CURRENTLY DATED temp files.
Anyone?

My folder at  C:\Users\mycomputer\AppData\Local\AVAST Software\APM\User

\W6rh3PLImidDCeQP  has  files in there such as   "kv_pam.db"
which are dated   07-29-2016.

Shouldn't these files be dated newer? Is anyone here knowledgeable?  I may not know much,

but I know when someone else knows diddlysquat either.  "Diddlysquat" means "nothing" or

"not enough", just in case you don't know that.

Next:   The newest file in the location   C:\Users\mycomputer\AppData\Local\AvastSupport
is dated May-13-2016.   I have always updated Avast automatically.  Wouldn't you think that these files should be newer?   So, is that just an abandoned Avast project, or is something wrong with the updates?  Is anyone here knowledgeable?

Let me tell you:  I do not need Avast-"EVANGELISTS". EVANGELISTS MERELY BELIEVE, but they don't know.  I need people who KNOW what is going on, who have influence on the company, who can take facts, data and symptoms, and figure out what it means and how to fix it.

Other notes:  my computer is SSE2 compatible, whatever that means.
It runs Win 7, with Svce Pack 1, at about 2.66 Ghz.  Intel Duo Core CPU  E3700.

Overall it seems that Artificial Intelligence has not been introduced at AVAST or at MSFT, or else
a search for answers would yield results.  The 100% natural ignorance and arrogance seems
to work flawlessly though, both on my and your side.

I still think that the "forum method" of customer service is inherently flawed, because it only serves to insulate the Avast company itself from its customers.  In other words, if I could yell at the boss, that would get results faster.  But may be the boss is just like Trump, and nothing gets thru that thick skull. Who knows.

@ WK_schnarfl,
Politics aside, you can try several things:

Repair Avast:
Control Panel> Program and Features (Add/remove program)>Select Avast> Select Repair. Reboot when completed
https://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB204

If Repair doesn't fix the problem, try the following:
Clean Install of Avast:

If you need additional help with the Clean Install, watch this:

Ok, first, I was lucky and the Avast "repair function" from the "Programs and features" in Win 7 actually worked.  Good.

But now Avast Internet Security (AIS) does the following when I use the "Wi-Fi Inspector' function:  It detects my ISP and Cable provider MIDCO,
who provides services in the upper Midwest (SD, ND and MN) as a malicious remote server.

it states that
a) The Device (at 192.168.0.1)
is accessible from the Internet,
b) it has a MAC addr of 74:ea:e8:db:11:44
and
c) it has a Catalogue ID HNS-WAN-ACCESS
Open ports reachable from address: 24.111.198.253
Open ports reachable from the Internet include: 7547

I closed port 7547, but that had no effect.  24.111.198.253 is an address range belonging to MIDCO, an ISP in this region.

So, this looks like a "false positive" to me, and Avast should check this out, and add MIDCO to its list of legit ISPs.

-----------

Next, it seems that the "repair function" of Avast has simply knocked out (edited out) the automatic startup of Malwarebytes.
I have used Malwarebytes for many years, concurrently in tandem with AIS.  I find both useful, as in 4 eyes see more than 2.

So I ask Avast to co-operate with Malwarebytes, and figure out a way to decide "Who's on first, and what's (Watt's) on second".  For people who do not remember "Abbott and Costello", you don't want to end up in a situation where, as per some movies, the secret agent manages to have the police arrest the
FBI, or vice versa.

From Techtarget I copy the following, just to show that Malwarebytes is an important fighter in the security field:  "Not all impacted antivirus vendors have released patches for the Microsoft Application Verifier vulnerability. Those vendors that have released patches include Malwarebytes, AVG and Kaspersky Lab. Although the Comodo antivirus product was slightly more difficult to defeat, a different unreleased proof of concept has been used for the DoubleAgent attack."

Meaning, Malwarebytes and others have done something to fight something, and Avast has not.  So, let Avast know.  I am going to contact Malwarebytes about
the "repair functions" of AVAST, and I am sure they are not happy about being crowded out.  I understand that business needs to compete, but on occasion its
a good thing to co-operate.

Thank you for your patience.
