since in installed avast home edition on windows xp pro.  i can not use the IM talk feature.

Do you use a firewall?
Does the talk feature use http protocol? If you disable WebShield provider, boot, does it help?
Is there any error message or just can't connect?

the message that i get is that the recipient needs to have the latest version of IM.  He Does.  I also have the latest version.  i disabled the web shield and the MS firewall.  still did not work. 
how do i find out if talk feature uses Http protocol.

Which IM program are you using?
Does in its website have related info about your problem?
