I won't complain too much about the boot speed. It could be a bit faster and on my Dell 8200 XP PRO SP3 sometimes Avast is the last thing to load in the Start Tray. But it still comes up fairly fast. Much quicker on my Toshiba Win 10 Home 64 Bit Laptop (but it has like 4GB RAM compared to 2GB in the Dell)

You may find if you get task manager up very quick, you will see that avastui.exe is running before you actually see the tray icon. Don't lose site of the fact that the avastui isn't security critical, unlike the avastsvc.exe.

Probably true, but when I boot up, I usually know how many items should be in the Task Tray .. on the Dell it is 9 .. on the laptop it is 11, but since that loads up quickly, I don't have to count them.
Dell Dimension 8200 P4 1.8Ghz Windows XP PRO SP3
Avast Free Antivirus 18.8.2356
Toshiba Satellite C855-S5347 Celeron B830 1.8Ghz
Windows 10 Home 64 Bit Version 1909 Build 18363.900

I have 8 on my XP Pro system and 5 of those I have hidden from view, so only 3 in sight Avast, Outpost (my firewall) and Win Patrol.

I have even less on my win10 home 64bit 2 on the tray if you exclude my battery indicator and but 7 hidden. Some of which I don't really need displayed at all my discrete GeForce graphics card (has 2) but I generally don't use that and just use the built in graphics of my CPU. My unified mouse and keyboard settings.

That however loads pretty quickly:
Acer Aspire F15 F5-573, Intel Core i5-7200U @2.50GHz to 3.1GHz, 8GB DDR4 RAM, GeForce  GTX 950M 4GB DDR5, 256GB SSD primary drive 1TB HDD secondary drive.
Plus I generally don't shut that down too often, just let it go to sleep and takes seconds to wake up.

Hello everyone.  I'm having a PAINFUL time just trying to register the free version (since my license expired).  It asks what level and I say free then thinks for a bit and just does nothing.

I click register now (in settings/subscription) and it sits there for a bit and clocks then goes back to where it was.

I have a key i got but i have no way to insert it??

our license key is:

---------- Cut here ----------
C55990953H1200A0219-K0MJ8EYA
----------Cut here ----------

To insert your license key, please follow the instructions below:

1. Highlight the license key above, then right-click it and select "Copy".
2. Open your Avast Free Antivirus controls and select the "Settings" tab.
3. Next, click the "Registration" tab.
4. Click the arrow next to "Offline registration" to expand this option.
5. Click the "Insert the license key" button.
6. Right-click in the empty Registration box and select "Paste".
7. Click "OK" – your license key is now inserted and your Avast antivirus software can now be used free of charge for a further 12 months.

There is no registration tab.

This is for windows 10.

Any help before i remove it for something else?

There is no registration tab.
What version of Avast are you using?
If there is no registration tab but "Subscription" tab, then you are using Paid version (probably trial) instead of Free.

If that is the case, you have to uninstall current version and install Free version again.

Both will work. You can see how to use Uninstall utility in this FAQ article:

After Avast last upgrade, I found that if the host OS Win7Pro Avast free anti virus "enable hardware-assisted virtualization" option is enabled (default), my Windows XP virtual machine guest OS cpus are at 100% all the time, making it useless. Disabling the "hardware assisted virtualization" option restores the virtual machine functionality (requires rebooting).
The host OS is not affected at all.
I didn't notice any problem running a virtual machine with guest OS Window 7 Pro.

Notice that the referred antivirus the the one installed in the host machine, not in the guest.

(Avast 17.2.2288 (buid 17.2.3419.59
 - Virus def. 170314-0
VMware Workstation Pro 12.5.3 build-5115892
Host OS version: Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit 6.1.7601, Service Pack 1
Guest OS: Windows XP service Pack 3 - 32 bit fully upgraded
I hope Avast can find a fix for this problem.
Thanks and regards.

Would someone explain exactly what that "enable hardware assisted virtualization" does when the option is Checked in Avast Free ? ? Is it needed ? ? What happens if it is unselected ? ? Will it work on a system with a P4 CPU ? ?

I am close to giving up on avast.  On the subscription screen (or I click activate) it asks me to select free or the premium and I select free.  Then takes me to a thanks for choosing avast free and instead of start free trial i click no thanks.  Why can't i extend the license for a year?  It only does 1 month?

If I click register now on the sub screen, it does the same thing.  Is this a bug?  won't let me input the email address to extend it for a year.  Super annoying.  I've had this happen on 2 windows 10 machines now.

Updated from Avast! 2280 to 2288 from within the GUI and had no issues.

Like the new animated amoeba for the tray icon as well as the more subdued interface color scheme.

but...

first off please don't replace my more up to date (12.0.199) Avast! Internet Security Google Chrome browser add-on with the BETA version of the same add-on (12.0.197). Bit annoying having to remove the BETA version and reinstalling the version I already had from the Chrome Web Store.

Second while I like the more customizable nature of this new "Game Mode", I'd like to remind the Avast! team that they're, at least in my eyes, an Antivirus and not some tool to magically make my system run better. Having the options of messing with my power plan, process affinity, windows updates, and windows notifications automatically set to enabled was extremely annoying. But, thanks to this new interface, is at least very easy to manage.

Also the context menu icon for scans is still the older Avast! yellow. Not sure if that has been missed but thought I would point that out.

Keep up the good work. =D

It was removed, I don't know why some preferred it to scheduled scans.

Sorry to hear that. I suggest to start your own topic because this topic is so huge that your post could be buried.
