Scan Completed with error
« on: March 14, 2006, 07:49:21 PM »
I've searched the forum for a fix to the problem I have with a customers Laptop, 'Scan completed with error' '42000=unknown error' an cannot find an answer to the issues. There appears to be many people with the same error but no-one has a fix. The error occurs when Avast loads and performs a memory scan and also when you try and do a scan of local disc's.

Hardware/Software spec:

Packard Bell Notebook 'Easy One Silver'
Intel Celeron 1GHz processor
256MB RAM
18GB Hard Drive
Windows XP Home

Below are some things I have tried and the results I've got:

1. Attempted a repair (while connected to internet) error still present.
2. Uninstalled Avast then reinstalled from a newly, locally stored setup file. Error still present.
3. Ran scan before windows loads (no virus found). Error still present when loading Avast in windows.
4. Uninstalled Avast and manually deleted all Avast folders on c: drive and temporary files from c:\windows\temp and c:\documents and settings\user\local\temp. Rebooted and reinstalled Avast, error still present.
5. ran sfc /scannow and fixed all dll issues, uninstalled Avast and reinstalled. Error still present.
6. Booted windows with a selective boot, only Avast loaded. No System.ini, Win.ini or services. Error still present.
7. Booted PC into safe mode, loaded Avast and performed a scan with no error. Therefore issue is with Windows in real mode.

All tests above were done with the Demo license and a valid 'New' License Avast (Home).

I would be very greatful for any help with this problem.

Many thanks in advance.

Do all scans always complete with this 42000 error ?

Is there any more information in the avast! Log Viewer ?
You may need to expand the Logging options, see image.

Are there any entries in the windows Event Viewer ?
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.3.6108 (build 24.3.8975.762) UI 1.0.801/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

All scans produce the same error.

I have set logging to debug, but there isn't any more info for the problem.

No associated error in the event viewer.

Do you have any other AV or security based programs that might be getting involved with the scan ?

I'm at a bit of a loss as most of the things I would have suggested you have tried.

No other AV on the computer.

Thought SPAMfighhter may have been causing the problem, removed it but still the same problem.

I'll try an OS repair to see if does any good.
