Avast disabled Defender and prevent from starting it. It is normal behaviour. You cannot run 2 AV without problems so Avast disabled it without need your action.

You should not be getting an error message. What version of Windows are you using ???

After uninstalling Avast, Defender is again your default AV.
When you install Avast, Defender shuts itself down:

You can run it as a second opinion AV if you use the Settings option in Defender,
Make the changes indicated in the Window that opens:

Once done, you can now use Defender on demand for a second opinion.

On Windows 10 it is Windows that disables Defender when another av is installed.
On versions prior to Windows 10 it is avast who is doing so.

You can run Windows Defender while having avast installed.
To do so, tell avast to run in "quiet mode" (If I remember correctly that is how it is called)
Defender will run in real time and avast can be used as a on demand scanner that way.

Eddy you aren't understanding the question. They aren't trying to run Avast in compatibility mode.
I believe my statement was Defender shuts itself down which is the same as Windows turns it off. :)
