How to activate the shields?

Somehow I can't activate the shields --- I did download the free Mac security program and installed it last night. All was well, but when I opened my laptop this morning the shields are inactive and doesn't help to enable them ---- nothing happen, my laptop is still unsecured!

How can this be this difficult?

Hi,
The shields are by default on after installation, so it looks like something went wrong during installation in your case. However to do something about it, we need more info from you. at least the relevant avast log messages from the system log file (Use the "Console" application to open the logs).
