I updated my Avast Free to the version 17.3.2290, and since then I have always received the message "UI Failed to load. AV service is not responding". "Restart Service", and uninstalling Avast! Free with Avastclear and a clean reinstallation did not help. The same problem with the new version 2291.  :(
I use Windows XP Home SP 3. Is the UI-part of Avast no longer compatible with it, or what? I can update the virus data bank, but since the UI no longer works, I cannot perform any scans anymore.
Thank you in advance for your help. I have been using Avast for many years now, and I would like to continue using it.  :)

You're welcome.

Just a point, do you have any other security based software that might have an interaction on processes starting ?

The following issue still remains in the new 17.3.2290:

After Smart Scan is completed and I click on Details, it starts the Smart Scan again.
Tried Repair, but get same thing.

No, only other security I have is CryptoPrevent utility, which wouldn't affect it. Just re-booted, same, will try repair soon and report back.

It could very well effect it since it prevents many changes in the registry from happening.
Try disabling CryptoPrevent, do your update and once that's completed, you may restart CryptoPrevent if that turns out to be the problem.

Oh I see.....how can I disable it - cannot see an option to - only 'Remove all protections', which I don't want to do or 'Create a new whitelist policy'?

UPDATE - Just looked in CryptoPrevent 'Blocked events' - nothing there.

I can manually start aswblDSAgent service - now showing in Task Manager.

So you remove it long enough to do a clean install and then start it up again.
You aren't going to unknown places on the Net so there really isn't any danger.

Repair Avast:
Control Panel> Program and Features (Add/remove program)>Select Avast> Select Repair. Reboot when completed
https://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB204
If Repair doesn't fix the problem, try the following:
Clean Install of Avast:

Really appreciate all the help...

What would I need to write to whitelist Avast in CryptoPrevent?

Sorry Alicia, I don't use CryptoPrevent. Maybe one of the other users who does can jump in and give you the answer. :)

In Win 7 Pro 64-bit, if you check Settings - Troubleshooting - Enable hardware-assisted virtualization, Avast PREVENTS XP Mode from starting.

This is an old problem.  Avast does NOT "get out of the way" when you want to do something virtual on your PC.

Also, there is a new sub-feature "Use nested virtualization where available".  Avast does not explain what this is.  What is it?

Hi alicia.rose,

Thanks for your help......shortly after my last post I thought the same and did this, I received a response this morning (please note, as I mentioned earlier, I have looked in CryptoPrevent history / 'Blocked events' - there is nothing there):

"CryptoPrevent does not apply any protections to the registry itself in Windows.  CryptoPrevent adds protections for the filesystem in the registry but it does not prevent using the registry at all.

If CryptoPrevent is blocking anything in Avast, there should be events in the History tab of CryptoPrevent as to what was blocked and by what rule it was blocked.  If you can check here and see anything related to an Avast tool let us know what is reported there and we can provide more information on the best way to whitelist the application.  If there are not any entries in the History tab, it may not be CryptoPrevent blocking it.  However you can try setting CryptoPrevent to None plan and test again after rebooting.  If this fixes the issue try incrementing the protection plan up and rebooting until the issue reoccurs.  With that information we can determine more about what is going on in this situation."

@alicia.rose,

I have CryptoPrevent installed on 3 Win 7 Pro SP1 laptops with just the basic protections set in it.  It has not interfered with updating any software, including Avast Internet Security.
AMD A6-5350M APU with Radeon HD Graphics, 8.0GB RAM, Win7 Pro SP1 64bit, IE11
i7-3610QM 2.3GHZ, 8.0GB Ram,  Nvidia GeForce GT 630M 2GB, Win7 Pro SP1 64bit, IE 11
Common to both: Avast Premium Security 19.7.2388, WinPatrol Plus, SpywareBlaster 5.5, Opera 12.18, Firefox 68.0.2, MBam Free, CCleaner

Hello everyone. I have the  same problem, UI is not starting. I made clean install of Avast, but it did not help with this problem. What to do now? I'm tired of reinstall Avast today... 2291 ver. is not  installing offline now, but I'm sure that it won't work properly - I tried to install online updates and it didn't work too. This problem began on Wednesday, when I update my Avast online like many times before. I use Win XP Pro SP3 32bit. Help.
