AshServer.exe going haywire
« on: March 19, 2006, 06:40:50 PM »
Hi, I'm new to the forum and i have been using avast! 4 for about 2-3 months)got the latest updates). I have come over a quite serious problem with ashserver and that is it that is spikes the CPU and periodically lock up my PC for 10 seconds when i start using my PC, and it doesn't seem to stop until i either restart my PC or stop it in task manager. I have tried to stop the on-access protection and turning it on, no go. I have tried to repair the installation, no go. I have tried uninstalling and then install it again, still no go. I am really at a loss at what to do next, so i came here to see if anyone could help me.

Thanks in advance
Sirius Cobra

Edit: I completely forgot to say that this happened after a thorough scan with the check archive enabled, and it found two Trojans, on w32.trojano or something like that and a w32.spybot or something like that.

Maybe it will be better if you schedule a boot time scanning...
Can you access the icon on system tray or not? After boot, logon, all the times the system freeze or just sometiemes?
Are you using any other antivirus or security program in your computer?
Which firewall do you use?
Which is your operational system?

I'm not sure on how to schedule a bootscan(other then reinstalling avastĀ  ;) ). The lock-ups and the spiking happens when I start using applications that requires the internet, like Opera and World of Warcraft (I haven't tried with too many other programs). I use Windows XP, service pack 2 and all the updates after it, i use Sygate Personale Firewall and i have no other antivirus programs installed.

Edit: Forgot to mention, yes i have access to both the icons on the system tray.

I'm not sure on how to schedule a bootscan (other then reinstalling avast  ;) ).

Click on the Menu button.
Choose Schedule Boot Time Scan.
Doing so displays a dialog allowing you to schedule virus scanning.
Check Archives, if you want scan all the archives.
Specify whether all the disks or just a specific folder should be scanned.
Select Advanced options for scheduling details.
Select how to automatically process infected files.
Choose how to automatically process infected system files.
Click the Schedule button to confirm the settings.
