So I now have the red flag on screen which reads"an error has occurred while attempting to update. Click here for more info. When I right click I am told the package is broken. In the log I am told it first occurred  25-3-06. On the anti virus set up i found a message
"found tried to download servers.def but failed with error 0x20000011
What does this mean, what can I do now?

Welcome to the forums, tamashin.    :)

BUT, was there another av installed before Avast and then uninstalled?
And if so, what was the prior av?

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.2.6105 (build 24.2.8918.824) UI 1.0.799/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

The computer is brand new. there were no other Av installations. Incidently, I can manually download updates without any problem and when I scan no infected files are found.

Thanks for the info so I done all of the above, logged off, waited, logged on again and there it is in the bottom rh corner of the screen as before. I have already sent a message to support but to date I have have not had a reply.
I really am at a lose as to what to do, except ofcourse to uninstall and then reinstall. Is that such a big deal?

I think it's the best you can do now... won't hurt...

1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot
3. Use Avast Uninstall for complete uninstallation (read http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_uninstall_util.html)
4. Boot
5. Install again by this command on the folder you've donwload and save the install file: setupeng.exe /forceinstall
Where setupeng.exe is the name of the executable

It was the best I could do! I am now the proud owner of a shiney blu flag in the bottom rh corner instead of the red flag.
Unistall/reinstall. Now Im off to bed, its been a rough 3 days.  :)

I'm also having this problem here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=43846.0

An uninstall/reinstall did not work for me. No solution yet.

Can you try to set your proxy to None into avast settings? (Update (Connections) > Proxy).
