[2281] Minor GUI bug - Screensaver
« on: November 22, 2016, 12:29:22 PM »
+ Removed screensaver and desktop gadget
As screensaver-scanning was removed, the settings are redundant. ;)

Cheers,
Asyn

I can't understand why they would remove the screensaver scan, many use it in preference to scheduling a scan. This is particularly poor timing considering we are getting posts in the forum that the scheduled scan isn't working as it should.

Hi, both will be fixed in next beta. We know how many users was using this feature and it was really low, that's why we removed it.

Still no "fix" (by returning the screensaver scan feature).  I used this because I did not want to schedule a scan.  I wanted a scan when the computer was otherwise idle.  The excuse that few used it is a cheap excuse.  Many users never bother to tweak the configuration of the various components included in Avast and yet Avast still has all those settings.  Is Avast going the way of free BitDefender and yank away all the user configurable tweaks?  If so, I won't bother with Avast anymore.

If "both will be fixed in beta, and which was mentioned back in Nov 2016, there has been no beta since then and no beta since then has been released?  Then why did I just get a *program* version update?

Avast was incomplete in its decision to remove the screensaver special scan.  Yes, they removed the configuration setting but then why did they leave around the "Avast antivirus" screensaver definition?  I was wondering why the screensaver stopped working but figured I did something bad to my setup.  Turns out the something bad was a decision by Avast.  Well, if you are going to remove the screensaver scan then notify the users during the upgrade process AND remove the "Avast antivirus" screensaver file, too!  Why have users left with a screensaver config that no longer works?  That's not just ignorant but also rude.  If Avast removes the feature, why are users not informed and why do users have to hunt around for how to remove the defunct screensaver definition?

After 4 months, it has become obvious that there will be no "fix" to return the feature but it will instead remain removed.  Users will have to discover through divination that the screensaver no longer works, select a different screensaver, and then go delete the C:\Windows\avastSS.scr file to remove the now defunct "Avast antivirus" screensaver definition.

Avast will detect PUPs.  They can sometimes change system settings that cause undesirable effects.  Apparently Avast has turned its own product into a PUP by not announcing the removal of a special scan and by leaving behind the .scr file so "Avast antivirus" is still listed as an available screensaver.
