For those of you with questions, the following site offers answers:
http://webaccelerator.google.com/support.html

Unfortunately it doesn't answer the question I raised about Webshield. :'(
I clicked your link and it says "We're sorry web accelerator is no longer available for download".  :P

Since then, Google has discontinued that utility.

Hi bob3160,

Google has left some other projects as well lately, I think they reconsider only the profitable gadgets now,

Due to the recession and they have stockholders, there is no need for genius.  Although I am not happy with some of their policies like privacy related issues, I like their spirit to try out something different and I hope this character of them will not be harmed terribly.

Google Proposes New Image Format - WebP
"What is WebP?
WebP is a method of lossy compression that can be used on photographic images.
The degree of compression is adjustable so a user can choose the trade-off
between file size and image quality."
You'll find the rest of the information at:

With the Web becoming more visual all the time, this may be something that's needed.
What's your opinion ???

I would say it is a good idea for those on dial-up (or slow broadband), some sites are so media rich as to be very slow loading and the user ends up passing it by (a loss for the site).

One thing I'm finding now having just got slow broadband, if watching a flash video clip, the default is to display it at the highest resolution it is very, very, slow. I end up right clicking and lowering the quality, but that seems to have little effect (doesn't seem to impact that clip as it is already being downloaded) and the setting isn't remembered or retained.

So if this new webp format retains the user preference it would save a lot of user input. Whilst it doesn't effect existing image formats and video clips, it may persuade site designers to use this type of image format rather than lose a potential customer.

This software (The web accelerator) is pretty outdated. Google doesn't provide it and it doesn't work much anymore. Please remove the download link. Also, Goggle is a malware site. Fix the damn title.
Oops. Didn't notice how old the thread was... lol. Linked here by a friend, you see.

Its an old topic created in March 2006 and the title is more to do with what Google is getting up to with new developments/tools/services. So it isn't entirely devoted to Web Accelerator.

The title thing... It says "Goggle", not "Google". "Goggle" is a malware site :D http://mywot.com/scorecard/goggle.com

@YoKenny: You forgot to attach an image to your post like you usually do. Have you ran out of them? Also, that thing is for converting images to webp format. Would only be needed by server admins anyway. Servers run on Linux mainly.

No need for an image for a text link.

If you want one then here is one.
