Avast "crashes" when applying KB2919355 with DISM
« on: April 14, 2017, 04:42:35 AM »
Good day.

Avast Free 17.3.2291

For the past week I have been trying to find the culprit to a problem I have (turns out it is Avast) and I have spent countless hours trying to work around this problem, but in the end I cannot fix it - it needs to be fixed in Avast.

My problem is that I build Windows 8.1 UPDATE 1 WinPE disks using the ADK, and when I apply/slipstream the "Update 1" to the WinPE mounted folder, instead of taking 10 minutes it takes an hour and a half and Avast never recovers - ALL I/O access after this is super slow. There is something in that particular MSU update that essentially crashes the File System Shield. I am forced to reboot to fix the problem of slow disk I/O after I dismount the WinPE. Going "Passive Mode" also fixes it and if I do this then the MSU applies in 10 minutes instead of 1+ hours. Steps to reproduce are below.

I consider this a very important bug. So important to me in fact that after I save a disk-image of my Windows 7 x64 this weekend, I will uninstall Avast and go try Kaspersky. I prefer Avast but I cannot use it when this bug is there. I have been thinking of buying the basic Avast for a few weeks now before I discovered this bug, just to get rid of the annoying "Please Buy Me" banner at the bottom of the window. Now I have to go look for an alternative :-(

Steps to reproduce:
NOTE You need ADK 5.0 and the Windows 8.1 "Update 1" files...

Code: [Select]
CopyPE x86 D:\Temp\GHOSTPE81

DISM /mount-image /imagefile:D:\Temp\GHOSTPE81\media\sources\boot.wim /index:1 /mountdir:D:\Temp\GHOSTPE81\mount

Thanks for the info Eddy, however they do not support Avast Free, my ticket was closed immediately after I submitted it (#783239). I discovered yesterday that I do not have to switch to "Passive Mode" to fix the bug (which requires a reboot) - I can just disable the File System Shield (which does not require a reboot). Still is a serious bug and unless I am allowed to submit a ticket I doubt it will ever be fixed (you need to do very specific things to provoke the bug).  Support Package Submitted, ID CD7EN.
