Website Timeouts
« on: April 17, 2017, 10:22:54 AM »
Hello everyone,

Since recently I'm getting some problems with my Avast Internet Security. (I think an update that happened one month ago)
The problem is that when I surf to certain websites that I get a timeout after a while, like the website would be down.

For example I have it on the website https://en.ogame.gameforge.com/, so I surf to there, and it works perfectly fine.
But after around 1 minute suddenly the website appears to go offline and I'm getting a timeout.

Now when I shut down avast shields, then suddenly the website works again.
This doesn't happen on every website, but on like 25% of them.

Anyone that maybe knows what the problem could be?

Thanks in advance,
Kind Regards,
Sam

Try turn off port scan

Avast UI -> Protection -> Firewall -> Settings -> Advanced -> Uncheck "Enable automatic port scan detection"

Any change?

Hi Pondus,

Man this seems to be working! Fantastic  :D
How come this messes up normal websites, is it a bug or ?

Thank you very much!

Kind Regards,
Sam

Hey guys --

This seems to be a pretty severe problem.   I run a large website and suddenly starting about 7 days ago started receiving reports of people having problems accessing our website.   They would be able to use the site for either a little bit or not at all, and then the connection would just start timing out.

We spent 2 days trying to work out what was going on, and finally we found a common thread across all those reporting the problem:  Avast.

Please fix the software, as it is causing connection issues.

Thanks

Pondus, THANK YOU!

I just started a thread "Avast Firewall is now blocking Blackboard," and then I saw this thread about "Website Timeouts." This is exactly the issue I've been having. I get the message that the website is taking too long to respond when it's an issue with Avast. (I know this because, when I turn off Avast's Firewall, the issue never recurs. I NEED a firewall, however, and I've paid for this one.)

I just followed your advice and unchecked the box you indicated, and SO FAR, I've been grading away with no timeouts. None.
THANK YOU!

You may want to find my thread and put your suggestion there as other Avast Blackboard users may be looking for a solution, too. The Blackboard forums are full of folks having this same issue, and I'm willing to bet that 90% of them use Avast.

Again, thank you from a grateful teacher!
Trish

Done.

Again, thank you. (Avast should be ashamed. This should NOT be an issue.)

Yepp and i think this happend a week or two ago (or am i wrong)

If possible they should have released a temporary fix that would turn port scan default off for evryone while working on a real fix

Or better, do as several other AV vendors have done, dropp the firewall as win firewall is good enough and always work, and then they could use the manpower at other issues ....

Default port scanning timeout setting is 30 minutes, after which the site you want to visit is available again.  That is, if you do not disable port scanning, which if you do disable, will allow normal traffic to occur.
