LogViewer Error Entries
« on: March 21, 2006, 10:32:55 PM »
I'm very new to Avast! (three days).  I found the following 3 error entries in the Log Viewer as I explored avast! the day following installation.  I have only done two "thorough" scans so far.  I don't know if these three entries were a result of the installation on 3/19/2006, or the first scan I did that same day, to be perfectly honest.

3/19/2006 7:31:40 PM   Administrator   1872   Error in aswChestC: chestOpenList Error 1753.
3/19/2006 7:31:40 PM   Administrator   1872   aswChestInterface - Program error description: CChestListView::LoadFiles() chestOpenList() failed: 2147422219.
3/19/2006 7:31:53 PM   Administrator   1872   aswChestInterface - Program error description: CChestListView::OnCreate() !m_strErrorWnd.IsEmpty().

Do I need to be alarmed by these errors?  Do I need to take any action?

No. Not at all... just verbose of the logs. When you run the program for the first time, maybe, the three system backuped files were not there yet as they should be now.
Maybe someday Alwil team remove that much info from the logs and do not alarm the users. Maybe advanced users still want to know them  ;D

Thanks, Tech, for the speedy reply & reassurances.  Yes, the 3 system files appeared where they should be.  I have read virtually all the help index topics now and know why there are there.  Nice proactive protection  feature.   No problems with installation, updates or scanning so far.  Looks like a GO for now.

I tend not to look at the avast Log Viewer (too frightening ;D) unless avast pops-up a warning, etc. then I look for info about that, otherwise I leave it alone, it is more a tool to help the support staff.

Program Recommendations
« Reply #4 on: March 22, 2006, 06:51:12 PM »
 :)  Hi Buttoni :

     I was looking at your list of programs and make the
     following recommendations :

    1) Replace "IE-Spyad" with "IE-Spyad for ZonedOut"
       available at www.funkytoad.com/zonedout.htm .
       Eric Howes now recommends using "ZonedOut".
    2) Use MVPS Hosts File only; the Spybot Expert(s) I have
        spoken to recommend this. Their Hosts File "coverage"
       is for those with no other "specialized" program.
    3) To "complement" your antivirus & antispyware programs,
         use the good & FREE "Ewido" which "specializes" in
        trojan, worms, & generic dialers ; available at :
        www.ewido.net/en .

Thanks for the tip about Spybot Hosts, SpiritSong.  Help2Go folks recommended adding the Spybot entries to the end of the MVPS, so I did.  Paranoid me fell for the "More is Better" argument.  What can I say!?!

Actually, I have Ewido on -demand already.  Also Adaware SE on-demand.  Just forgot to mention those two.

Will go check out the IE-Spyad for ZonedOut.  Not familiar with Zoned Out.

 :)  Hi Buttoni ( and other interested persons ) :

     The info on IE-Spyad's latest site at :
     http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm .

     has the following :

   "  ANNOUNCEMENTS:

IE-SPYAD for ZonedOut

IE-SPYAD users should consider using the recently released IE-SPYAD for ZonedOut, available below. This new version of IE-SPYAD uses the free ZonedOut security zones utility from FunkyToad to load and unload Restricted sites lists, making the management of sites in the Restricted sites zone much easier and more convenient. See below for more information on IE-SPYAD for ZonedOut. "
