[Solved] Avast 17.3.2291 and router netgear 834gv3
« on: April 22, 2017, 12:55:40 PM »
I want to point out a problem that came out with updating avast free to version 17.3.2291.
When I access my router Netgear DG834gv3, configuration pages are very slow to open, it takes me more than a few seconds (+5), the connection is via cable.
With the previous version of 17.3.2291 (for example 17.2.2288), the pages opened quickly, as always.
I tested with another pc, with the old version 12.3.2280 of avast installed, the router setup menu opens correctly.

The enabled components are only 4:

File system protection
Behavior protection
Mail Protection
Web protection
+ Browser cleanup

All PCs are windows 7 SP1 with I7 processors, browser Firefox

With my mediacom tablet, android 4.1.1 with avast updated to 6.0.1 not known the problem, loading pages is faster, more than pc.

I hope that with the next updates of the program the problem will be solved.

Do you have the port scan patch installed already ?
What exact version of avast ?
What OS/SP ?
Any other security (related) software installed ? (or was there)
Do you have the latest firmware installed ?

1. I did the last update this morning, as the antivirus asked me to restart the pc. Avast Free 17.3.2291 build 17.3.3443.0
2. PC with windows 7 sp1, pc is updated with the latest microsoft patch of April 2017
3. I do not use other software for controls, I use only avast, since other real-time control software can cause problems, so I've also turned off windows defender.
4. The router has the latest installed patches, version 4.01.40, released years ago.

They are pretty tedious when it comes to updates, especially when they concern the security of PCs, phones, TVs or anything else  ;)

Is it just with FF or also with other browsers ?

With internet explorer 11 the opening speed is satisfactory, with firefox no.
But the problem is that before I upgrade with the other pc with the same features to this, avast, I tried with the same browser, the 52.0.2 before it came out 53, and the opening speed did not resonate.
Or the problem is avast with firefox, or firefox, but i have some doubt that firefox is not the problem but avast.

Thanks for all Eddy.

Try this:
Start FF in safe mode and open the routers configuration pages.
Let's see if that makes a difference.
It is does, it is likely a add-on/plugin in FF that is causing it.

The firefox safe reboot I had never tried, but unfortunately the situation does not change (i use plugin: Noscript and adblock plus)
However, it all coincided with the update of avast.

I repeat again that with the two PCs I connected a few days ago I did the same test at the same time: with the latest avast version 17.x I have problems while with version 12.x I had no problem, same configuration, And both connected by cable.
I do not think so, but I can also go wrong, the problem is not firefox.

With avast version 17.2.2288 it opened up quickly.

Looks like the problem is avast + FF.
One more thing you can do is checking what shield is causing the problem.
Disable one shield and access the router.
If nothing changes, enable it again and disable the next one.

I suspect it is the webshield.

You are the best.
The problem is the "web protection" service.
Deactivated that is fast with firefox
The router configuration pages open very fast, just like once

Thanks for all Eddy.

I hope some of the staff can see my report and how I solved (thanks to you eddy), to fix this problem.

However, web protection leaves it active, otherwise there is no security in surfing.

It is of course a workaround and not a final solution, but set a exclusion for the router.
That should work.

I tried to exclude the single ip of the router from "web protection" but the problem remains, it almost seems to ignore the exclusions list.

At this point I have finished my tests, and thanks to you I have seen that the problem is related to "web protection" if disabled the problem does not occur.
The problem is not urgent, I look a few more, but at least I now know the reason, waiting for the definitive resolution of the avast staff.

Thanks again Eddy

Ciao ;)

Unfortunately, doing other tests with the last avast version, the problem is not solved, although it seems that the wait time for opening router page and navigation inside is decreased.
The problem only occurs with 32-bit firefox (the default browser) while with internet explorer 11 no problems.
Meanwhile I also reset firefox.
I did another test with linux, Ubuntu mate 16.04, with firefox and the router's pages are opened quickly.
