HELP Avast on snooze and does not restart
« on: April 25, 2017, 07:20:18 AM »
When I booted up my computer today Avast did not come on some shields were down. I shut down the computer to see if it was a mistake and rebooted. Avast still would not start up, and I checked and it was set on snooze. I tried to restart it manually/tired to open the program and it would not restart and then I ran repair which it did, shut down and rebooted. It is still stuck on snooze. should I uninstall completely and re-intall?

I am using windows 10 64bit Avast is the up to date program version

Repair Avast:
Control Panel> Program and Features (Add/remove program)>Select Avast> Select Repair. Reboot when completed
https://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB204
If Repair doesn't fix the problem, try the following:
Clean Install of Avast:

As far as I'm aware these .sum files (aavm4h.dll.sum) are used when avast checks its integrity.

What I don't know is when they get this random (looking) number on the end. If as you say after the Repair more of the .sum files have the number appended, that may support my best guess of them being used for integrity checking.

What folder are these files in ?
I have the file-name.dll.sum files in the C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast folder, but neither did they the numbers appended.

The Avast file, where the program is Progam Files>AVAST Software>Avast

OK.

I don't believe these .sum files are actually used during normal avast usage, but for integrity checking.

I have to admit I'm a bit stumped by this as to why avast doesn't wakeup when the OS resumes from sleep. But types/differences of sleep. If you set your system to fast start it will start quicker from sleep, but avast may well not recognise the system as being in sleep.

So if you check your windows settings and just have win10 go to sleep after a time does that have any effect on avast ?

Unfortunately I'm running version 17.4.2293 beta of avast free, but on a winXP system and in that I don't see any .sum files in the C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast folder. However, on my win10 laptop I'm using avast free version 17.3.2291 I can see some .sum files but none with the numeric value appended.

I would say it is probably to take step two that Bob suggested a clean install of avast (Reply #3 above)..

I either have my system on or off and not in sleep mode. I have restarted my computer numerous times hoping the problem would right itself, sadly no change. The .dll file aavm4h.dll  is not replaced
 just changed to aavm4h.dll.sum.14920603798120

That is what I'm saying, the original .dll file isn't replaced (removed) or rather it might be replaced by the .dll.sum file. That may trigger the appending of the numeric value on the checksum (.sum) file.

Run the clean install of avast suggested by Bob (Reply #3 above) avast uninstall utility, it is actually designed to remove avast if it can't be removed normally by the control panel uninstall process.

Uninstall worked smoothly.Thank-you.  Oddly when I started up my computer to start the process the internet was blocked( count not access it) so I took the opportunity to uninstall and when I rebooted internet was back on. Windows Defender is running now.
I would like to do some scans to make sure nothing is undetected before I reintstall Avast, can you suggest what i should use?
