After version 17.3.2291 i found avast bugged, it creates various slowdowns with other applications and malfunctions of the same.
Returning to the previous version all returns to normality

Thanks so much. Is 17.3.2291 the last stable version? Or should I go down to 17.2.2288?

didnt helped, i don't have nested thing...using latest version, still not loading UI :(
I agree with the fact that I've also used Avast for the past 10 years or more, but this version is the worst by far, slowing down so many programs it is not worth having. I already mentioned the captcha in another thread as what they have is not something even humans can read. They did say they don't have the problem on their system, but there are too few testers and too many other factors that could influence the behavior (the few people have no way of testing all possible hardware and software variations). What I don't agree with is the lack of damage control. If I see my update screwed up so many things for other people, I will roll it back and do further testing, maybe collect logs and additional information from the affected people. I am sure they wouldn't mind providing the info if only they didn't have to deal with this mess in the meantime.

Not sure why it helps some people, but for more of us this is ticked by default.

DavidR, thanks for the reminder. I always check all options of the status monitoring, but never thought of going there when I wanted to stay on an older version and get rid of that annoying exclamation mark.

For now, I'm back on v12.1, at least until the current file system shield problem is fixed. This time I chose v12.1 over 12.3 because if I decide to stay there longer I can disable my (hourly) script that reverses the Windows Defender disabling "feature" that came with v12.2.
<snip>
It's unbelievable how I got used to the slow starting and the big size of the GUI that came with v17. With v12 it's fast and has an acceptable size.

1.  You're welcome, when faced with what you would consider a pain in the backside, it is often hard to be rational and look for a feature in the UI that would restrict it.

2.  I'm only on 17.4.2294 on this XP Pro system (my other two win7 and win10 systems I have on 12.3.2280 as I'm not in love with 17.x.x and I still feel it is work in progress and I'm not ready to commit to it yet.

3.  I absolutely hate the 17.x.x UI size when there is so much empty space, but I simply can't understand the intransigence to allow the user to resize this to suit their own requirements. Allied to this I totally dislike the fact that when opened it is centre screen in your face, move it to a position, close it, open it and it is back in your face again.
Do you have the v12 installer?

I'm not sure what are your issues exactly, from your post it seems both of you had issues with the GUI. I don't really have a GUI issue, maybe because i don't really use the GUI that much so my fix was just regarding the filesystem.

Uninstalled Avast after this update, glad I didn't purchase license as I originally intended for this year.
This update caused huge performance issues on my computer (delays in other software, video freezing issues) - and since every update lately has caused more harm than good, I'm not planning to return. What's the point of beta when final version is one big mess?
I've been loyal to avast for past 8! years, but enough is enough.
(And yes, I know I can repair or downgrade, but I'm not going to. It's easier to uninstall and use different product that works than fixing software that's intended to run quietly in background and do it's job).

Had it for longer than you and always did recommend it as the most sensible due to all the transparency (now taken away) and configurability. The last thing you want from an antivirus is for it to slow down your system to a crawl. They need to realize that the vast majority of users won't report the issue on a forum, but will be pissed nonetheless. I think there are enough people posting the same issues here for them to acknowledge the problem and roll back. The main problem here is they refuse to even acknowledge it, meaning there will not be a fix. If this keeps up then I am not staying either. Enough alternatives out there that can do the job.

Suprise/no suprise, searching for the word alternative, this one came up https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:QDtvNu48-fYJ:https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/2xhdtu/after_10_years_avast_and_i_are_pretty_much/+&cd=3&hl=en&ct=clnk

2 years ago. And yes, i've held up to their endless nagging for quite a long time now, i forgot what i did, somehow managed to disable the upsell nag or that they cut it down, although i'm not seeing it anymore, i do realize it gets bloated overtime.

1. Stop trying to upsell a free thing to a paid thing to me. If you wanna nag, once a month is fine, not every single day for every single 6 hours !
2. Stop trying to shove in things i don't need, i dont need secure browser, VPN, mail shield, and 101 of these bloatware !

3. Stop trying to impress the new generation by changing your UI every day.

I can go on, but it's pointless. Not even 1 rep came up to this thread or other tread to solve any issues.

If you're looking for alternative, that reddit thread is pretty good.

This was my answer to one of the folks who attended a presentation and wanted further information
about the various Components offered by Avast.

I use those 3 shields, software updater just for info if new flash/java etc. come out and the browser extension since it puts a mark next to google results to tell you if a link is safe before you click it. Other than that, I also untick everything else.

Would be nice if someone actually addressed the issue we have. This is quite unrelated to the main issue of a major performance hit for many of us due to the latest update.

Mail Shield - useless if you dont use mail software
Browser Protection - this one annoys me, might be good for some
Software Updater - this one is OK, but supports almost nothing (also, ninite.com is good for checking new versions)
Browser Cleanup - mostly useless (havent seen any toolbar in years tbh)
Home Network, Passwords - useless in most cases, there are better solutions for both

And all of this is useless if your PC runs like crap because of Avast.

I used to be proud of avast being Czech company as I'm from Czech myself, but since last few versions, everything was going downhill. Why buy AVG when they can't even make their main AV working.

I made clean install of windows few days back to one of my family member, incl. avast installation. Can't wait to hear from him that PC is now running like a crap.

Please don't compare apples with oranges. The image was posted to answer a question about the various components.
It has nothing to do with addressing the problem you are having.

Sorry, but I haven't seen any question about those components. Only people saying they are not needed.

Don't really see a question there. The first mention of components was calling them bloatware, not asking what they are for. Either way, they are optional so I am fine just un-ticking them during setup.

For everybody who wants to go back to the working 17.3.2291, you can get it here
http://www.filesetups.com/windows/anti-malware/avast-free-antivirus-17.3.2291

Took a while to find since most sources link back to the avast site that only hosts the latest.

I did my own paranoia check by downloading the latest version and comparing the hash to the one from Avast. It checked out. I also checked and both the latest as well as 17.3.2291 are digitally signed by Avast. I just installed it and everything seems to work fine as before. Make sure you only update the virus definitions (the ones in the offline setup are from March). Do NOT update the program itself or you will get the issue back.

For anyone that happens to be a gamer and are experiencing your games not loading up properly or just freezing and lagging, it turns out that one redditor found out it was the File System Shield that was a major Culprit.

From the Overwatch Reddit on people trying to figure out why they can't play it.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Overwatch/comments/69nw9y/fix_overwatch_taking_ages_to_start_up_freezes_lag/

I just upped my sub for another year, but I think I may uninstall and find a new antivirus.  This has been the 2nd time that Avast has messed up something on or about my computer, the first being that after an update, it changed my main drive that I run windows from to another and rendered my pc useless until I got troubleshoot help from the person who built it for me.

- fixed several crashes in Web Shield (including corruption of large downloaded files)

Does this mean any large files I downloaded since the last update are ruined? How large is large?
