Avast busy on my system
« on: March 31, 2003, 07:42:37 PM »
I would appreciate an explanation to the following.
it seems ashserve.exe has been quite busy on my system, ie
% cpu 90.89%
Lt % cpu 91.06%
time involved = 5mins 19secs
total virtual memory used =20,828kb.
a similar instance occured a few days earlier though not quite as heavy.
thanks.
great programme, slowly but surely eliminating bugs, and we are all learning from each other.

Do you mean ashserve.exe is always using 90% cpu usage? This should not happen.

Ashserve.exe does use various levels of cpu when avast is scanning files (I think ashserve.exe is the resident shield), but on my system it always sits at 0% when the system isn't loading files.

Hope this helps.

rainman,

are you saying that ashServ.exe is constantly taking 90% of CPU? Even if the computer is idle? :o

This is definitely not the expected behavior!

What OS are you using?

Thanks,
Vlk

PS. No rain today? ;)

Thanks for reply,
No, ashserve.exe is not using 90% all the time only occasionally.
Whilst i am reading your posting its hovering around 1.25%.
I seem to have two Avast exe running Ashserve & Ashmaisv, which is hovering around 0.50%.

I'd say these monitoring tools for Win9x are not too precise... I mean - is the system actually slower than you'd expect? I've even seen Win9x systems that were reported constant 100% CPU load but despite that were very responsive...

I'm using Taskinfo 2002, must say i've been reasonably happy the way it performs, however there is probably some truth in what you say.
The slowness I seem to experience seems to be intermitent both on and offline.
