Retested using the Dodo NBN Internet connection, without the workaround.

No timeouts when using >nslookup.

Avast! online installer went to completion with no problems.
Can update definitions with no problems.

This is not how it was 3 to 4 weeks ago (which is good).

A more refined workaround:

My modem/router at 10.0.0.138 is normally my Connection's IPv4 DNS.

Manually set the DNS to
10.0.0.138 and
8.8.8.8

8.8.8.8 will only be used when 10.0.0.138 fails.

Now using this workaround:

In my connection's TCP/IPv4 DNS settings:
155.143.128.19
155.143.254.19

I plucked these addresses from the Belong NBN modem, after having recurring trouble, when using the previous workaround(s), of the internet access stopping after {[a few hours] and/or [rebooting one of the computers] and/or [something else?]}, and having to {[reboot] and/or [restore to factory settings]} the modem (did not actually try the modem reboot option alone), to restore internet access.

Sorry for Necro  :-\
Had exact same problem, avast stopped updating with unknown error, won't web-install, only offline-install with no updates either. Different PCs, same ISP.
Switching to google public DNS did help. Like a charm i might add.

It's rather weird to use DNS to update a program imo... can't they tell what their own server's IPs are?

Not if the phone number (IP address) is bad, which is what DNS is (a phone book) when it works.

Change your DNS to the one from Google and try again.

Man I wish I had seen the post about just trying to change the DNS settings before I tried to uninstall Pro. I had the same connection error as the OP when I tried to manually update after I got a Windows Action Center notification two days ago that was saying that Avast was reporting itself as out of date. I later logged into my account on the Avast website and found out that Avast had stopped communicating to the servers almost 2 weeks ago.

I tried to repair the install first and that didn't fix the problem. Tried doing a clean uninstall using the same method mentioned in this thread (avastclear, cleaning remaining files, etc.), but now I can't seem to get it to install correctly again.

The "online" installer hangs on the opening splash window and eventually gets an error. The "offline" version installs but doesn't seem to fully install. The desktop shortcut is a generic icon, instead of the normal avast icon for example, although Avast still opens at that point. However, when I try to sign in to my account in the UI it says it can't log me in and it also won't accept my license. I tried typing in the license key and also inserting the license file that i downloaded from my web account. Even after changing DNS settings to Google's servers and re-installing again, I still can't get Avast to recognize my account or license. I feel like Avast is totally borked for me at this point.

Looks like I posted about 10 mins too soon. I decided to try the Avast Free online installer from CNET instead of the one directly from the Avast website and it re-installed without any problems and I was able to connect my account and added my Pro license. Needed a reboot after updating my license and I am now no longer getting the Windows notification that it's out of date.

Update:

Using a different Router eliminates the problem.

I stopped using the Belong ISP-supplied Router:

Board ID:
F@ST4315U
HardWare Version:
253638337
Build Timestamp:
161026_1711
Software Version:
9.84_F4315_Telstra
Bootloader (CFE) Version:
9.73
DSL PHY and Driver Version:
A2pvI041d2.d26b
Wireless Driver Version:
7.14 RC43.21
ConfigId:
F4315_Telstra_6.conf

and started using another Router:

TP-LINK TL-WR841N Ver: 11.0

and it just works. Avast! updates with no problem. No workaround required.
