Sorry OE is an email program are you sure that you mean it can't connect to other sites ?
- can you provide examples.

I.E. is a browser and may possibly be what you are having a problem with ?
Or perhaps you mean you can't send or receive email ?

What is your browser ?
What is your firewall ?

Two avast processes that require permission to connect to the internet are ashMaiSv.exe avast email scanner, ashWebSv.exe avast Web Shield, there is one other that is required for update that you may need later, avast.setup avasts Update process.

If we think about the same thing, then it has nothing to do with avast!. Take a look at this thread and I gave a detailed explanation how to fix that problem spiced up with screenshots for easier understanding.

Hi Sasha, hopefully that is what deedee meant in the question, that possibility flew right past me. I guess we will have to wait and see.

Hi,

Thanks for all the replies.

Perhaps I have not explained myself clearly. I will try again….

The email program I am using is Outlook Express vr 6
Browser - Internet Explorer
XP Pro - Serv Pak 2

When I receive and open an/any emails, I am UNABLE to view other sites, pages…. that are associated with links.

i.e.  I receive email news updates from CNN.COM……. and others….
When I try to link to one of their pages to view a particular story,
article….I am UNABLE to.

The same goes for ANY other links that I receive in an email.

This ALL started AFTER I installed AVAST Home.[/color]

Previously I was using Norton, but found it too comber sum.
A friend of mine suggested I use AVAST. So I did.

(I installed ALL of Norton, cleaned the registry……)

The browser works fine, I can send and receive emails
BUT I CANNOT view other sites, pages…. that are
associated with ANY LINKS in the emails I receive.

I am willing to upgrade to AVAST PRO but ONLY
when the above problem is fixed and I monitor the program to
insure that ALL viruses are found and destroyed before
they infect my computer. (as Norton does so well)

Any and all help is appreciated. I ask – beg one thing.
I am new to this type of thing and I am in NO WAY A TECHI…..
If there is a solution, please try to explain how I can fix this
problem in simplistic-lay terms.

Thanks so very much….

Dee Dee

Exactly... you explained yourself clearly... the only problem is... you didn't read carefully what I suggested. That is the only way you can fix that problem. Again, it has nothing to do with avast! since avast! can't change your hyperlinks protocol in any way. It just happened to be the case on your computer and it appeared (pure coincidence) in the same time you uninstalled Norton and installed avast!. I am telling you, it's not because you installed avast! but IT IS because you uninstalled Norton. Something went wrong during the uninstallation process, and you've got those problems.

Read again, those replies I posted here (again, same link, now in bigger letters ;) ):
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=18018.msg153117#msg153117

Hyperlinks protocol has a lot to do with association of links inside your e-mails, and nothing to do with proper operation of your internet browser... that's why I posted that advice.

Are you an computer techie or not doesn't really matter. All you have to do is to carefully follow my advice in that thread (and that screeshot as well) and do as suggested.  ;)

Thanks Again......

In the mean time I reinstalled Norton so as to receive emails and their links....  I will reinstall AVAST and follow the procedure as noted. I will let you know how it works out.

Are you saying that after installing Norton you've installed avast without removing Norton?
Are you using both of them at the same time?  ::)

AND, even if you uninstalled Norton in the normal way before installing Avast, this is where the problem is. Norton will leave behind junk files/registry entries that will foul the installation of any other av program. Any and all traces of Norton/Symantec products must be completely removed from your computer before any other av program is installed.

See this post for farther help ......
