Avast Mail Shield
« on: May 13, 2017, 05:40:04 AM »
I am running windows xp with the latest avast version and virus definition files.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled at least 5 times.  Each time cleaning up ALL files from previous uninstalls and reinstalls.  But still the mail shield will NEVER load with windows.  I always have to turn it on manually.  I am using Thunderbird as my mail client and it is set as the default client.  Why will the mail shield not load with all the other shields?  I have to remember to turn it on every time I open my mailbox.

Repair Avast:
1. Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs -> Avast
2. Click on 'Repair'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.

Thank you so very much Asyn, but alas I have already tried that several times as well.  The mail shield will easily turn on, but it will not load with windows.

Mail shield doesn't have to load with windows.
It just should be installed en enabled to function.

It has always loaded with avast when windows started in the past.  This started happening with last Avast program update I think.  If it is not loaded Avast always tells me that I am not protected because all my shields are not turned on.  That means every time I want to check my email I must first remember to turn this shield on.  It is not supposed to operate that way and never has before.  It works just fine on my Windows 7 machine, but not on the XP.  I also have 3 other XP machines that I work on offsite and all of the Avast shields on those machines load with windows just fine.

Give this a try:

- Remove avast through control panel
- Run avast clear
- Boot and remove all leftovers manually (folders, files, registry entries)
- Try to install avast with the off-line installer.

Thank you for your interest Asyn.   Here is the info you wanted:

Avast Free:  17.4.22.94 (build 17.4.3482.0)  Virus Definitions Version 1705120-8
Windows XP Home Version 2002 SP3 32 bit.
Only other security related software installed is Malwarebytes.  But, it is not set to monitor and does not run unless I run it to scan. I do that once a week.  It does nothing in "real time".  I have that service shut down.  I have attached a picture of everything that runs in task mgr at start up.

I am totally appretiative of your continued interest, Asyn.
I did go to the link you provided, but it most certainly seems to me that this is something provided to "purchasing" user.  I am a "free" avast user.
I found that evident in the very first step of instructions that read

"Submit a ticket to Avast Support with the following details included:

    Your valid email address
The order number you received in the confirmation email after your Avast purchase
    Details related to your issue

But thank you for your time.
