After installing the latest Avast program version 17.4.2294 two things happened:
1) I could no longer access anything on the internet
2) the Avest UI would not work.

My pc is running XP and I use Foxfire for a browser.

I found the problem keeping the UI from working - The Terminal Services was not set to automatic (same problem that others had)

If I disable the Avast shields then it all works fine. Foxfire works and emails download. When I reenable the shields, nothing downloads.

Any ideas as to how to fix?

I was going to do an uninstall and then reinstall Avast to see if that would fix the problem but the uninstall of Avast caused windows to stop loading.  Turns out some System files in the sytem32 and  subfolders had been deleted!!  Had to do a complete restore of the hard drive - took me almost 2 days to recover from that.

any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Gary

Perform a clean installation of avast with the off-line installer.
