Not a novice, I search for help, find answers and fix things UNTIL now.

Avast has me baffled!

avast wants password to go into settings, smart scan, to do anything!

I think he is saying that Avast needs a password for anything.
Smart scan operation: need a password
Performance upgrade: need a password
Generally anything on his Avast right now: needs a password.

If I understand, that is the problem.  I think it is usually the master password for avast passwords.  Can you show a pix?  Does it say "Master Password."  I need that to get into my password database on Avast.

If you have sett a password in avast and lost it you need to reinstall

You could also check this:
Avast > Settings > General > Passwords

There is a box there that says Protect avast with a password.  If you can get to it, that may be the source of your problem.  If you can't shut it down, make a password you can remember.  You can also control what parts are protected by your password.
