Browser IMAGE/VIDEO probs after latest Avast update 17.5
« on: June 29, 2017, 07:19:45 AM »
Hi guys.

As stated in another post, I am also having this problem with both Firefox and Chrome (the error message when closing the browsers), and I am also using XP SP3.

But I have noticed the problem going even further, as on pages such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc., the images and videos on the pages are not loading properly or even loading at all !

This has only started after I did the latest Avast update. Before that, all was well. Now, everything is a mess.

Any ideas on what this problem could be and if Avast will send out a patch to correct all this ?

Thanks !

The real problem is that most browsers that will work on XP don't support HTML 5.
Time to update/upgrade that system.

Wrong.

There is a bug with the HTTPS scanning in the current version which only affects Windows Vista and XP.

As a temporary measure you need to disable HTTPS scanning via Web Shield settings.
Windows 10 Home 64-bit • Avast Free (latest stable version) •  Malwarebytes 4 Premium (On-Demand) • Windows Firewall Control • Google Chrome • LastPass • CCleaner • O&O ShutUp10 •

Alikhan, thanks !

I did what you suggested (disabling the HTTPS scanning) and the images and videos play fine now on the browsers !

Looks like you are indeed right about a bug.

But, is it safe to have the HTTPS scanning disabled ?

Thanks !

Not that I watch a whole lot of videos other than youtube, etc. But I haven't found any issue so far on this winXP Pro SP3; avast free 17.5.2302 and Firefox 52.2.0 ESR version.

Whether  the server talk HTTPS or HTTP?

Most connections use https now, so it isn't something that I check for every connection I make.

Hi  :)

Same Problem Here!

Vista Laptop
All 3 of my browsers affected... Google Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer.
With Enable HTTPS Scanning turned ON - It's impossible to browse the web. Webpages never finish loading. or sometimes don't load at all.
When I turn Enable HTTPS scanning OFF - Everything goes back to normal. And I can surf the web fine. Webpages load just fine.

It started after the last Avast Program Update  :(

In my case when trying to watch videos ( site : http://www.watchfree.to/tv-2a2cf8-Dark-Matter-tv-show-online-free-putlocker.html/season-3-episode-1 )
Even though the videos load without any problems I get that spinning wheel through out the movie. On other sites such as https://solarmoviez.to/ or you tube etc.. I even tested porn sites everything is ok. This problem applies to firefox, opera, sea monkey where I have got the latest version of adobe installed. When I use google chrome where version of adobe 21 is installed if not mistaken movies play normally without the irritating spinning wheel.
Everything was running normally for all browsers a couple of days ago. I really do not know if this is related to avast in my case. Any ideas ?

One more thing on that site that I got the problem, Video Js flash component V5.1.0 is used while on the solar movie the component used is version 7. But then again it does not make any sense since everything was ok three days ago. Go figure.

Well, guys, like I mentioned in my thanks to AliKhan, as soon as I disabled the HTTPS scanning, everything went back to normal, and all images and videos played fine.

I think he is on the right track that there is a bug affecting XP and Vista, regarding the latest update 17.5. I'm hoping that Avast will send a patch to solve this prob for us XP/Vista users.

Until then, I'm just keeping my HTTPS scanning disabled.
