bootable CD and (start program) prob.
« on: April 06, 2006, 05:39:44 PM »
We recently purchased BART CD . . . I installed the file, updated
the software, then created the ISO file.  I used Roxio to create
the ISO file which left the following structure at the root of
the CD:

DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS                File Folder     6/17/2004
I386                                                    File Folder     6/17/2004
WIN51                                      1 KB    File                3/31/2003
WIN51IP                                   1 KB    File                3/31/2003
WIN51IP.SP1                            1 KB    File                3/31/2003
WINBOM.INI                              1 KB    File                2/21/2003

Booting from the CD may have (sort-of) worked . . . unlike
earlier attempts, our crashed server kicked into a scandisk,
did some kind of repair and brought us to the desktop.  But
no GUI interface for BART.

Also, I don't recognize a file to start the program.  I ran the
ASWREGCLEANER.EXE file and it opened a GUI window, but
I'm not seeing the GUI interface (shown on Avast's website)
offering utility selections.

Can someone advise me how to get around these issues?

Thanks,

Steve

Hi,

Since I don't know much about the Roxio burner try this free one. Since Microsoft didn't give it's built in burner the ability to burn ISO images this is an unoficial patch that will do it. So just double click the ISO file put in your blank CD and it will burn for you. Click the link below to download.

Sconrad, are you sure the boot is ok?
Are you using CD-R or CD-RW media?

Are you saying the scandisk feature is 'messing' the GUI?

Are you sure you really booted from the CD? To me it sounds more like you booted the original OS on the machine...  ???

I downloaded Alex Feinman's ISO burner, but I'm having the
same problem.  I've tried this with a Maxell CD-R and with
a Fuji CD-RW . . . both end up with configuration files on the
CD's root of 1 kb size.

Re: our initial run of the BART CD . . . our server was down
with the BSOD error:  "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE".  I went
into a Recovery Console and tried running a chkdsk /P /R.
It looped a few times between 50% and 75% but eventually
reported it had completed.  On reboot it reported another
BSOD, this time regarding a corrupt software hive.

An Internet search led me to Avast's doorstep for the BART
CD program.  After a purchase, online, download and creating
the ISO CD, I tried booting with the CD . . . this time a scan-
disk routine kicked in and did some additional repairs.
(Hence the "may have (sort of)" running of the CD.  I wasn't
sure if some basic routine was run from the CD or not.)

I get the impression, though, that BART didn't run at all.
That the CD may have been passed over as non-bootable
and that we lucked-out in scandisk kicking in.

All the same, I'm back to square one on creating this ISO
CD.  I ran an update on the software, right after installing
the BART Manager.  Could the ISO that was created be
faulty?

Please advise.

Thanks,

-Steve

If you see the content of the CD (as you posted in the initial post), it's not very likely to be faulty, in my opinion.
When booting from a CD, I think you should see (right after the POST screen) a "Press any key to boot from CD" message. When booting from BART CD, you would see Windows splash screen for a while, which then turns into BART splashscreen.

Also, make sure that you have booting from CD enabled in BIOS and set to the top position (or rather, before the hard disks).

On our server, booting with the BART CD in place, I did get
the prompt to hit any key to boot from CD.  I did this, got
a Windows splash screen, but no BART.

Also, I don't seem to be able to start the program from a
system that's already loaded.  If I put the CD in a drive,
it detects the CD and a Windows dialog box opens,
announcing:

Windows can perform the same action each time you insert
a disk or connect a device with this kind of file:

Pictures

What do you want Windows to do?

Options offered are:

- Copy files to a folder on my computer
using Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard

- View a slideshow of the images
using Windows Picture and Fax Viewer

- Print the pictures
using Photo Printing Wizard

- Open folder to view files
using Windows Explorer

- Take no action

As BART isn't starting (and I don't know of a particular file
to point to) I end up canceling.

On other posts on this Forum, I've seen different size files
at the root of the CD.  Mine are all 1 kb.  I suspect something
is wrong with these files--but I didn't create them.

Any advice on creating a CD with working configuration/boot
files?

Thanks,

-Steve

As Igor said, your not booting BART CD but you're booting your own operational system.
This window dialog box shows you've already booted Windows and NOT Bart CD.

Any advice on creating a CD with working configuration/boot files?
Steve, or your CD burned is not doing its job well or your CD drive is not working or your CD media should be changed...
By the way, can you answer my previous questions?

Tech,

'Sorry if I haven't been clear.  Let me try to clarify.

To answer your above questions:

Sconrad, are you sure the boot is ok?

I'm not sure which "boot" you're talking about.  If you
mean the boot option of the CD, no, I suspect this isn't
working right.  If you mean the HD, the server did
succeed in booting to the Desktop after the one time
it booted and kicked into a scandisk routine.  (Since
I had just "pressed any key" to boot from the CD,
I had assumed the Windows splash screen, I saw,
was associated with the O/S loading from the CD.
I get the impression, now, that it detected the CD,
but couldn't find the necessary files to boot, so it
   switched over to the HD.)

Are you using CD-R or CD-RW media?

I've tested it using both media.  I've also tried using
Roxio (on another pc) and the Alex Feinman plug-in
on my own pc . . . both create a BART CD from the ISO
with 1 kb files at the root of the CD.

Are you saying the scandisk feature is 'messing' the GUI?

No.  Scandisk kicked in when I tried to boot from the
BART CD.  After it completed its repair, the Desktop
successfully came up--but no BART.  I suspect whatever
is missing on the BART CD is preventing it from auto-
  loading correctly.

====

Re: the Windows dialog box . . . I am talking here of placing
the BART CD in my own CD ROM drive, not the server's.

If I pop the BART CD in the drive of my XP PRO SP2 system,
Windows detects the CD but doesn't load any application.
It doesn't seem to know what to do with it.

I hope this clarifies things.

Thanks,

Steve

If you mean the boot option of the CD, no, I suspect this isn't
This is what we need to manage... Bart CD should boot in your system...

I had just "pressed any key" to boot from the CD, I had assumed the Windows splash screen, I saw, was associated with the O/S loading from the CD.
Bart CD loads your 'system' to  work with it. The splash screen you've seen is from your system but, if it were working, Bart CD shoud take care of everything after that.

I get the impression, now, that it detected the CD, but couldn't find the necessary files to boot, so it switched over to the HD.)
This is the second possibility...
To be sure your booting from CD you must see a lot of CD activity, loading and starting Bart CD, it's not that fast, one minute for instance.

Are you using CD-R or CD-RW media? I've tested it using both media.
Strange...

If I pop the BART CD in the drive of my XP PRO SP2 system, Windows detects the CD but doesn't load any application.
It doesn't seem to know what to do with it.
Bart CD does not run in Windows environment but before...

Bart CD does not run in Windows environment but before...

That would explain the Windows dialog behavior, then.
Also, that I wasn't able to find a file to start the program
    under Windows.

How do the files look that I posted above?  Other posts
on the list showed larger file sizes.  Also, I don't see any-
thing in those files to suggest the files have all they need
    to properly run.

Well, the stuff you posted looks OK, but it doesn't mean everything is burned correctly.
You say you tried even on another computer and it still didn't work? (i.e. you didn't get the "Press a key to boot from CD" when starting the computer)

Just use magiciso to burn iso image to CD. it is a good iso burner. and it works fine to me so far.
