web pages slow
« on: April 08, 2006, 02:27:46 PM »
ive got a decent adsl, 1.1mbps and it should open up most web pages in a blink of an eye. but when i have avast on-access protection ( home edition) running, sites will take up 2 minutes to load then i only get a 'page cannot be displayed' message. refresh, another 2 minute wait, then another 'page cannot be displayed'. it isnt until i refresh a second time that a page will open but i still have to wait for it too load.
This happens for all pages, all the time and it is very annoying. i solved the problem by turning off avast. when it is turned off the internet is normal and pages open up fast and fine.
I dont want to have my anti-virus turned off though!
im running a windows XP, avast min requirements are met and 1.1mbps adsl. could anyone suggest a solution or at least tell me what is wrong?

You can disable only WebShield provider and not all the protection.
Are you using High sensitivity on the Standard Shield provider? If you set it to Normal and enable Webshield, what happens with the browsing speed?

Anyway, it was a workaround and not a solution...
Something is wrong in your computer or in your avast installation.
Can you answer the second question I've done?  ;)

Hi, I'm new to this forum.  I have the Free Avast Home program.  Ever since I installed it, I noticed that it is taking anywhere from 20 to 25 seconds to download any link or web page.  I, at first, thought it was in conflict with Zone Alarm (which seems to be in conflict with everything) so I turned it off and just use Windows Firewall.  But I still have the same problem.  This forum was the only place close enough to my problem.

Any ideas what's causing the delay in loading would be most appreciated.

hello mamasgolfing Welcome to the Avast forum

have you tried Tech's suggestion a few posts above and when you say "I turned it off "ZoneAlarm
How did you turn off ZA?
When you turned off ZA did you also stop TrueVector Internet Monitor?

Thanks for answering so fast.  I had to do some grocery shopping for my hubby.  He tells me he likes to eat.   Anyways,  I usually click on the ZA icon and shut it down, but I did as you suggested, and TrueVector Internet Monitor was not running.

I did what Tech suggested and it speeded up the web browsing, but I am still having a slow response when I click on a link I receive in my email (OE).  It still takes about 20 - 25 seconds to load.

Thank you for the "Welcome" also.

 :)  Hi Geri :

In the future when posting here PLEASE start your own
"thread" and not piggyback on someone else's .

As to your 20-25 seconds, it might be helpful if we knew
what type of internet connection you have ( Dial-up, DSL,
cable, etc ) and the name of your ISP !?

It also would be helpful to know the name of your OS .

"Improvements" !?

 :)  Hi Geri :

     From your signature, your Operating System is "Win XP";
however, it does not say if it is SP1 or SP2 !?

It is not wise to use the Windows Firewall, since some of
us here call it "half a firewall"; since you seem to be having
problems with Zone Alarm, you should consider using the
Sygate Personal firewall, which I & several others here use.
It can be downloaded from :
     www.filehippo.com/download_sygate_personal_firewall/ . There is a
     tutorial at www.kotiposti.net/string/SPF_eng/SPFGuide.html

Expert "RejZor" has posted an "Avast Proactive Protection"
Guide that you should take a look at :
     http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=20412.0 .
