Malwarebytes 3 free scan
« on: June 20, 2017, 02:49:18 PM »
I have read mixed reports about Malwarebytes 3 (MB3). I am using the prior version MB 2 and am constantly invited to update the engine to 3. This update would mean losing the standalone website protection MB Anti-Exploit, which does not seem to conflict with Avast's (I use Avast free), although I may be wrong about that.

Meanwhile the MB icon at the bottom of the screen tells me that I have updated the virus protection by simply giving the day's date,  not the update number which I think it did before. If so, it is a useless encumbrance on the machine, and I should either de-instal MB or update it 3 and do without Anti-Exploit.

If anyone is interested or has experience of this, I would be interested, since a lot of you use MB as a back-up scan.

Don't let the free version of MBAM 3 keep you from installing and running Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit Free.  It is the full version of MBAM contains the anti-exploit, but the free version does not.  So conflict is not likely or possible if you use free versions of both.

You can get the latest anti-exploit here:  https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/184939-mbae-109-latest-standalone-beta/
Scroll to bottom of thread for latest version.

Thanks.
I have just checked my Drive C entry for the Anti-Exploit - Win 7 Pro 64 bit - Programs 86. It indicates latest tmp file (empty) entry for 11 May 2017, and C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit\mbae-svc.exe} & "2017/05/10 - 23:28:50 - 224 - {info} Getting current working directory. Result: {C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit\}"  which presumably corresponds to the version mentioned by @Arthi at the bottom of the page dated May 12 you kindly linked me to.

If I upgraded to free Malwarebytes  3 my Anti-Exploit would be un-installed  automatically, but I assume I could reinstall it using @Arthi's link which I opened, where I am invited to download mbae-setup-1.09.1.1410.exe. Although Firefox tells me "this file is not supported", it downloaded OK. I have not executed it yet.

I am assuming  Anti-Exploit, which is an active shield,  does not conflict with Avast web shield.

I would be grateful for any thoughts on these 3 observations.

As long as you've got free (on-demand) scanners I don't see why there would be issues as resident real-time scanners would not be active as they are not installed or running:
  • Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit Stand-Alone does auto-update so your information is correct
  • If by upgrading to Malwarebytes Free version 3.0, and the original MBAM program was also free (on-demand) Anti-Exploit should be left alone and not uninstalled
  • Submit your downloaded file to VT dot com https://virustotal.com/ to ensure your copy is clean.  Since Anti-Exploit is not really an active scanner in the absolute sense of the word, see below
As for Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit being an active scanner, it is, but not in the way one might think:  https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/186348-anti-exploit-scan-question/  Essentially, it works by booby-trapping the active exploit via injection into the running process/file, the exploit when it happens is detected and then blocked.  Blocking is only active when a change is detected and not before.

RansomFree by CyberReason works by placing specially crafted files in directories known to be attacked by cryptographic ransomware; if one of these files is changed or altered, RansomFree will step in and notify you of the infection.  Otherwise, it doesn't really do anything to your system.  It won't prevent the ransomware from being downloaded to your system.

Thanks for answering the points I raised, but does Anti-Exploit conflict with Avast web shield?

No, not that I am aware of.  It's the transient nature of the beast that makes this possible.  WebShield runs all the time.

Well, I went ahead and updated MB 2 to MB 3, rebooted and discovered that not only had the standalone Anti-Exploit been un-installed, but that MB had put me on the premium trial version, which ends in 13 days. That was not what I expected, but I assume I'll be OK as long as I avoid the "upgrade" button for the next 13 days.

I have installed Anti-Exploit according to the link you mentioned, but not yet rebooted. - Again I will avoid any invitation to upgrade.

I assume that I am under no legal obligation to upgrade the main MB program whenever I open it it to use its scan --as long as I avoid the "upgrade" button?

No need to continue with trial version(s) if you don't want it.
  • Settings>My Account>Disable Trial license
  • No legal obligation to upgrade either is required
Installed stand-alone version of Anti-Exploit and allowed it to run for 7 (?) days to expiry.  No issues.

If you do decide to keep full versions of MBAM see:  https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/202126-going-from-mbam-v-2-to-malwarebytes-3/#comment-1132535

MBAM -
Gotcha, thanks. I have done away with further nagging demands. I will leave MB out of programs to run at start-up, and rely on the scan to update itself whenever used.

Anti-Exploit -
"Installed stand-alone version of Anti-Exploit and allowed it to run for 7 (?) days to expiry.  No issues." -
Not sure I follow you, because in the settings of my Free version it states the option (ticked by default)  "automatically update to new versions"...nothing about expiry.

Anti-Exploit -
Aaah, you probably meant that your Anti-Exploit continued to run as before after your MBAM free trial expired!

Yes.  Picture is what pops up if you confirm trial period is over - Options are provided to confirm end of trial, purchase license, insert license.

Sorry for confusion, was running (in this case) free MBAM and trial Exploit.  Changing over to free can be done at any time, or you can wait and select via pop-up.

You are running  a "trial Exploit". I found my Exploit standalone Free - I forget where - perhaps at the MBAM site a year ago, although in the present Explorer file the entries only go back to 12.05.2107 - unsurprisingly to the date of your download file link, and as  mentioned it states the option (ticked by default in Settings)  "automatically update to new versions" as did my original.

The version I installed yesterday from your Exploit link recognised that mine was already lurking on my system (or traces of it) and asked if I wanted to replace it. I did that. since the icon in start-up appeared to have been un-installed by the new MBAM 3, as warned, & so I assumed the whole program had been removed. It looks and behaves exactly the same as the Exploit Free I had been using.

I t says it continues to self-update. No different to the original I installed. But does it self-update? Any idea?

It does update on its own.  Requires internet connection to do so.   ;)
