Avast taking up 6gb of disk space!?
« on: June 23, 2017, 09:31:50 AM »
SO my C disc (windows one) started recently to loose space(I'm on old PC with old HDD. not much space on it).
And today I decided to see what is going on(sometimes it would go to 2GB of free space).
Soo I found out that AVAST of all things weights whooping 6,58GB. I go in and blue folder setup is taking 6,24GB of AVAST. Without it it's only 344MB.

Id delete what's inside but I don't know what that folder does or rather what files inside do.

Also there is no way that this is normal. Because if it is yeahhhh no.

I'm on windows 7 and use free version of AVAST. I want serious answers. I used search.

What Avast version (latest version being 17.4.2294) are you using ?
I'm checking this on my win10 Home 64bit laptop as my win7 SP1 netbook is using an earlier avast version.

Are there any specific files or sub-folders within the setup folder that are very large ?
Most of the files in my setup folder are .vpx files and these are used for for validation against corruption, these would be protected files.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'blue folder' setup, my C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\setup folder is 343MB size on disk. In explorer some folders my be coloured blue if you have compressed them, but I think avast would protect against such interference in avast folders.

The total size on disk for the whole of my C:\Program Files\AVAST Software folder is just under 1GB and that includes the defs sub-folder that has multiple virus definitions sub-folders and these should be periodically cleared by avast housekeeping.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.3.6108 (build 24.3.8975.762) UI 1.0.801/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

The folder is just named setup and letters are in blue same inside. It is also full of vpx files(they take up all that space) pus folders :CRT, emupdate, Inf, iplugins.

My version is 11.1.2253 and it doesn't seem to want to update to anything new.

I might just install and try to install newest version and see how that works over time.
