If you want to install ONLY the firewall and not other parts of NIS (Norton Internet Suite) or NSW (Norton SystemWorks) and, specially, if you're NOT installing Norton Antivirus (NAV), I think no problem will be.

Anyway, why do you want to use Norton Firewall and not other one?  ;)

 :)  Hi Gylie :

To "expand" on what "Tech" has shared, why would you
pay for a firewall ( Norton ) when there are equally good
if not better FREE ones available, such as Zone Alarm,
Sygate and others !? Sygate is known not to have any
      compatibility "problems" with Avast .

There is also Comodo and Jetico which are better than Norton.
Comodo is the only firewalll to pass all the leaktests, GRC Shields up etc with just its default setting  :)

I thought that Sygate was bought by the Symantec. I don't know if there is still a free version available.
It seems that the free version will not be updated anymore unless you buy the Symantec one.  ???

To extend on what timcan said the tested version was Comodo 1.1.005.  In resonse to their performance in these tests Comodo have now relesed version 2 which passes all the tests with its default settings - and you can still change some of the settings to make it even stronger  :).

There is also planned another update sometime this month with some improvements and fixes.

In my opinion you can just use ZoneAlarm Free, simple to setup and with no conflicts, at least in my system with avast home.

Yep, Sygate now belongs to 'the dark side'.  You can still get the older version of Sygate and use it just fine for free.  But, there will not be any updates and yes you now have to pay for the symantec firewall if you want to go with Sygate.

Yeah zonealarm is excellent as a free and easy to use firewall, but, for those who want something more advanced they would probably prefer to look at something like Comodo or Jetico

No. I am refering to Sygate and Norton Personal Firewall. Sygate being good and Norton being bad.

EDIT!!!

I cannot say anything about Jetico because I have not used it.

Sygate Firewall

 :)  Hi all :

As I have mentioned several times, the Sygate Personal
5.6 ( Free ) firewall can be downloaded from :
    www.filehippo.com/download_sygate_personal_firewall/ .
As far as I know, it has NO connection to any Symantec/
Norton firewall ( other than being bought out by them ) .
