Update Problem
« on: April 11, 2006, 06:17:41 PM »
Today, I tried to manually update one of my users to the latest version of Avast.  The update appeared to work properly, but a subsequent reboot brought up the following popup error message (immediately after logging in):

Popup Error Message:
Entry Point Not Found : The procedure entry point cmnbInitExt could not be located in the dynamic link library aswCmnB.dll.

None of the Avast services start, nor will the program launch from the Start Menu (same error message pops up).  I tried a Repair install (from Add/Remove Programs), but that failed.  So, I uninstalled Avast, rebooted, reinstalled Avast, rebooted, and everything started working.

So, once again, I ran a manual program update (by right-clicking on the blue ball), and rebooted.  The same error returned.  Yet again, the Repair install failed.  I found a similar topic here:  http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=19094.0, so I also searched for the file aswCmnB.dll.  I only found one instance, in the Avast program folder.

Additional information:

From Warning.log:
4/11/2006  8:58:27 AM  1144763907  username  4012  Function setifaceUpdateFiles() has failed. Return code is 0x00000003, dwRes is 00000003.

From Error.log:
4/11/2006  8:52:43 AM  1144763563  SYSTEM  3476  avast! Antivirus service is not running, computer is not protected!
4/11/2006  8:52:43 AM  1144763563  SYSTEM  3476  Unable to start avast! Antivirus service, error 00000433 has occured

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

1. Is there any other antivirus or security application installed in this machine?

2. How are set your avast! services?
Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services
I suppose you have to have four avast! services:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner service)

The two first of them should be Automatic loaded and the two last Manually loaded.

3. Can you try to repair your installation? Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair). You must be connected to the internet while repairing.
If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

Hope any of these procedures help...

Thanks for the fast reply.

1) There are no other antivirus or security apps installed.  This machine is using Windows XP / Service Pack 2.

2) There are four services:

"C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswServ.exe"  (Automatic)
"C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe"  (Automatic)
"C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswMaiSv.exe" /service  (Manual)
"C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\AvAgent.exe" /ServiceStart  (Automatic)

All of the above services fail to start.  I should've mentioned, also, that this is a managed client (we use ADNM for several hundered machines).  On other machines, all of these services are running properly, even after a manual update performed today.

3) Attempting the repair results in the following error:

"There was an error while changing the product configuration."

I have already done the uninstall / boot / install / boot again procedure, as noted above.  Upon reinstall, Avast does work until an update is performed.  After updating, the same error returns.

Thanks again for your help!  It's greatly appreciated.

Maybe it will be better to post here:: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=10.0

Brandon, besides I've translated ADNM to my own language, I'm not an specialist on it. I'm an user like you.
I've asked for further help  :)
