Avast Free Online Security - settings not saving
« on: July 07, 2017, 05:54:22 PM »
Every time I restart my browser (Firefox) I have to re-enable the automatic blocking of trackers and other settings in the "more settings" menu.  What's going on?  This is extremely irritating.  I just switched to Avast, and like it except for this.  Anyone have a suggestion?

Avast doesn't change your Firefox settings. :)

Bob, looks to me the OP meant the AOS settings.

Eddy is correct, I do mean the AOS settings.  There is nothing wrong with my Firefox performance.  AOS does not appear to retain any setting change I make from session to session.  And for the record, no, I do not purge cookies on closing Firefox.  I got tired of having to accept dual-layer authentication every time I log on to websites... another case of an "improvement" fail...

Change the settings as you wish.
Check if the cookie is set.
If it is, close FireFox.
Open FireFox and check if the cookie is still there.

It doesn't look like the cookie is being set.  When I change the settings, it remains in effect in each tab that I open, but I cannot locate a cookie by that name (or even part of that name).

I am using Firefox 54.0.1 on a Windows 10 platform.  I use the same settings Nigel listed: accept cookies, 3rd party never, keep until expire, clear history on close (except cookies).  Just for grins I changed it back to "keep until close" (which is the setting I used for years) and added an exception for Avast.  That seems to have done the trick.  It also eliminated those miserable capchas on this forum.  Eddy, Nigel, thank you for the help and suggestions!

No, it didn't eliminated the captcha.
The captcha is only there the first three posts.
As this was your forth one, you do not need to enter the captcha anymore.

As for the problem, you deleted the avast cookie in your previous settings.

Ah, didn't know about the capcha.  Just knew they were very difficult to resolve on my not-so-large not-so-new display.

It shouldn't have been deleting the cookie until I changed the setting back to "delete on close" this morning.  Apparently they were deleting despite the setting rather than because of it.  The settings Nigel listed were what I had been using recently (last six months or so).  This is an older laptop and it occasionally does strange things to or with software for no easy to spot reason.  Anyway, problem solved.
