Extreme system slow-downs
« on: July 12, 2017, 03:31:59 AM »
I recently conducted a Windows 10 software rebuild for a friend due to performance issues and loss of functionality.  It was a Toshiba P840, Core i7, 8 GB RAM.

The reset went smoothly and I proceeded to install all his familiar third party software.  Performance was significantly improved.  I installed a version of Avast with the "-cnet" suffix at the end of the title.  All was still well by the end of the night and he was a happy boy.

The following day, all the previous issues had returned .... up to a half hour to get to the desktop.  I did some research into Windows 10 slow startups, there were many disgruntled users there.  None of the suggested remedies worked.

I recently had a client who had issues in a ACAD program after a recent Avast update.  Long story short, I had to replace Avast with Avira, as that is what seems to be the only solution.  With that in mind I decided to uninstall Avast from my friend's system.  Low and behold, performance returned to the Windows 10 system.

I decided to download another copy of Avast, this time I came across a version without the "-cnet" suffix and it was between 300 to 400 K smaller.  I installed it, startup time and performance remained unaffected, though shutdown time was significantly extended(takes about 5 min), but my friend could live with that.

So, Avast, Why do you let these variations exist out there.  The cnet version cause me great consternation in front of my friend.  I have been a user and advocate of your product for well over a decade.  I am starting to lose faith as it appears your evolving marketing strategies are beginning to threaten a great product.
