Avast Web Sheild creating problems
« on: July 06, 2017, 05:33:05 PM »
I have vista ultimate ,yes still! Problem started after last program update for avast
I noticed when I go onto my homepage,or any of my websites favorite or otherwise I get a continuous trying to load the page sometimes it will load but then I'm unable to get into accounts on certain web pages it will then try to load again  , no longer can watch videos on YouTube because it just continuously buffers this never happened before I've always had a fast internet connection. This happens on any browser that I use Firefox is my main browser and my second one is Opera chrome no longer supports Vista.
I narrowed it down to the Web Shield specifically by trial and error I uninstalled Avast several times and reinstalled turned off several components finally narrowing it down to turning off the web shield then I was able to connect to all my sites without any problems able to watch all the YouTube videos no buffering so what is the problem here with the Web Shield that is a very important component you can't do without.

Seeing the same thing today, problem appears to be in the Https scanning, ticking that off resolves the problem. With it on I get a speed of 100-500Kbs  watching a Youtube video. With it off, it's back to 40-50Mbs (I have Fios). I'm concerned though that with it off it increases my vulnerabilities. Hopefully this is just a problem with this update, and will be corrected in the next.

I am having a similar problem.  Since installing the update I am having a terrible time getting onto most websites.  Most of the time it just scrolls and scrolls until I disable the shields and then reload the tab.  Once I am connected to the site I can enable the shields again.  This is obviously a risky way to log onto sites, but it is either that or I won't get into most sites.  I am wondering if it is possible to revert to the prior version.  Do you have any idea if we can still use the prior version of the program and just continue to update the definition files?

Avast does not offer prior versions, but some people seem to have found them on download sites (use at your own risk).  An older version should work as long as it can still update the definitions, but you will not benefit from the latest stuff that is in the new version.

Perhaps because e_friedman would prefer to have HTTPS scanning rather than to not have it.  ;) ;)

That means to put up with the problem till Avast fixes it.

I also had this problem start on the same day.  I guess that's the price we pay for having a free virus protection program.  I hope they fix this soon.   :-\

The paid versions of Avast seem to be the free version with added functionality, so I would imagine that even the paid versions have this bug.

WebShield is in all versions of Avast. If you have this problem, you need to turn of the https checking till Avast fixes the problem in
Windows Vista and probably Windows XP SP3

Same problem here since the 11th, Free Version on Windows Vista. Only disabling the HTTPS-scanner helped.

As already explained in this thread, it's a known problem and Avast is aware of the problem:
