VPS Update File is Wrong Version - Won't Install
« on: June 27, 2017, 03:29:43 AM »
I just installed Avast 5 on my 14 year old, slow PC with Win XP. I went to https://www.avast.com/download-update to download the most recent update. However, the update won't "install" because it indicates it's for Avast 4.8.

I cannot download the update through the Avast software because it would take 16-25 hrs on dialup. I have to go to a relative's house to download the entire update from the URL I mentioned above.

So what is the problem with the VPS update? Is it on your end or mine? Could someone please fix this?

Thanks

On another thread I think someone posted that updates are discontinued for version 4.8 for some reason.

Newer version will not work on my machine, maybe 5, but I do not need that version.

Yes, but I'm saying that the VPS file I downloaded is supposed to be for Avast 5 and it's not. The file indicates it's for Avast 4.8. When I try to open or run the file, Avast 5 recognizes it as for Avast 4.8.

So where is the VPS file for Avast 5?

@ blublu87 and lylesjeremiah,

Link for version 5 vps updates is here:  https://www.avast.com/download-update

You may already know this, but support for versions lower than 8.0.1497 versions was discontinued on 31-05-2015.
https://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB208#idt_010
Support for 4.8 vps updates ended 01-2017:  https://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB23#artTitle

There are other antivirus programs other than avast still available, just ask.
Windows 10 Home 64-bit 22H2 Avast Premier Security version 24.1.6099 (build 24.1.88821.762)  UI version 1.0.797

mchain,

I'm trying to tell you that the file from that download website is incorrect. I downloaded what is supposed to be the Avast 5 update, but the software says it's for Avast 4.8. The wrong file is provided as of June 26, 2017. The file itself even indicates it's for 4.8.

blublu87,

time to install a newer version.
The latest version will work on XP SP3 if your CPU supports the SSE2 instruction set.
If your CPU does not support SSE2, the latest version that will work is the avast 2015 version.

Confirmed.  I'll notify a mod about this.  Eddy and I are users just like you and cannot change things.

edit:  now we wait (it is the weekend).

Thanks mchain. Should I have reported the problem to a mod to begin with?

Thanks mchain. Should I have reported the problem to a mod to begin with?

You have done it correctly, by bringing it up in the open support forums.

The report to moderator function is for instance, reporting posts that don't conform with forum rules and or spam, etc. It isn't for reporting individual user issues with avast, that is what the support forum is for.

The real problem is that you are using a obsolete version.
You can't expect avast to give any priority to this problem.
They have much more important things to fix/solve.

Then why do they even bother posting the update file to begin with? Why even bother to support older versions at all? I'm sorry, but your logic doesn't make sense. Avast should either fix the problem or not support older versions at all. It's kind of a waste to provide files/updates that don't work properly because they can't be bothered to fix it.

Who said that they will not fix it ?

Not only old versions are not supported anymore, but avast has also isn't fully supporting XP anymore.

Get it over and done with and install a recent version an/or get a new(er) system.
