Avast Free preventing Java from running
« on: July 26, 2017, 04:20:44 PM »
Hi all,

Since the last program update - to 17.5.2303 - Avast is preventing Java from either starting or updating/installing on my 64-bit Win7 machines.  A single 32-bit Win7 appears to be working fine, but three 64-bit machines are not.

When Avast is enabled, attempting to start Java results in "Java Platform SE binary has stopped working" (with crash info below), and attempting to update or (re)install Java results in a (Java installer) 1603 error and an unsuccessful installation.

The Java startup crash is in javaw.exe:

Problem signature:
  Problem Event Name:   BEX64
  Application Name:   javaw.exe
  Application Version:   8.0.1410.15
  Application Timestamp:   596609a8
  Fault Module Name:   StackHash_0ec8
  Fault Module Version:   0.0.0.0
  Fault Module Timestamp:   00000000
  Exception Offset:   00000001000201b0
  Exception Code:   c0000005
  Exception Data:   0000000000000008
  OS Version:   6.1.7601.2.1.0.768.3
  Locale ID:   1033
  Additional Information 1:   0ec8
  Additional Information 2:   0ec82ffa8ef587f95e5cec6fb7e56ee1
  Additional Information 3:   0b21
  Additional Information 4:   0b2165f850fdb1ac3fb708ea24fdce85

Thus far I can only install Java with Avast disabled, and I have to exclude all of the Java binary directories - including \ProgramData\Oracle\javapath - to make Java run once installed.
