[POLL] Do you like the Avast tray icon notifications?
« on: July 31, 2017, 01:03:44 PM »
What do you guys think?

I've attached an image of how it looks on the tray.

A popular example of when this happens is when Avast blocks a malicious URL but the user doesn't clear it from the notification center.

I'd like to see an option for them to be disabled or at least change the colour of the notifications... red is usually for major issues such as shields disabled etc

Yep, I like them. :) (No problem with an option to disable it, though.)

I did use that as an example (but I have had that before) and my thoughts are, why have this tray icon branding if you have already had an avast alert.  It just seems pointless to me if you are getting other alerts/notifications why add further notifications that you actually have to dismiss.

-1 ;)
I don't because it then fixes the tray icon so it can't display activity, e.g. animation.  Or presumably anything more important like a shield disabled.

There has to be a better way. If the notification isn't important enough for a pop-up,
then it also shouldn't interfere with important items like shield disabled notifications, etc.

For me the colour is irrelevant, its function really is the Red or Blue doesn't stop it fixing the tray icon so it can't display activity, e.g. animation, or anything more important like a shield disabled.

Anything that generates its own popup/notification doesn't require anything further.

Nothing has been said about a user option to disable that function.

That's a good start but you also need to give an option to disable notifications completely

The new icon notifications are invaluable if you use Thunderbird and the mail shield, as the normal popups are quite often missed.  (Note to those who think that it's a waste of time having the icon notification because they will have already seen the popup!)
Putting a number in the red dot seems irrelevant though.  Couldn't the notification be done by just changing the colour of the animated icon?

there won't be any number just blue dot, similar to e.g. notification about new mail in gmail tab

Again this blue dot if superimposed over the avast icon stops anything else being displayed Shield Disabled or animation of the tray icon.

It still doesn't address the user being allowed to disable that notification on the tray icon.  Whilst there aren't many respondents to this poll, but 60% of those that did requested the ability to switch it off.

Yet this hasn't been addressed !

yes the setting might follow, but let's try no to overcomplicate it, ok? 3 settings just about a systray icon (show, animate, show notif)....isn't a bit too much? of course if there's any red or yellow state it has higher priority

The state really isn't the issue, the higher the state, the more likely that it would have generated an avast popup, but once set it stops the tray icon animation.  You then have to address the notifications and clear them or the tray icon is frozen in time.

I'm not looking to complicate issues, just one option to disable notifications via the tray icon.

Currently there are only two options Show and Animate, it isn't I that want to complicate that. It is avast that want to add another function to it and one that I fear will annoy (given the 60% that don't like it and want an option to disable notifications) more than please.

If there is no option to disable notifications displayed on the tray icon, the only other option is not to display it at all. Now there is over kill, but it is the only option.

Sounds like you're borrowing something from a new feature in Android O. :)
