Nothing unusual in Updates, it isn't every two months a .1 increment isn't a major update and you don't have to do anything special to receive updates. avast! has an automated process of checking when you go on-line if updates for either the virus signatures or program are available.

See this link for a history of updates to the program, http://www.avast.com/eng/av4_revision_history.html updates usually bring improvements to the program and if any minor bugs are found in previous versions of the program this is how they are corrected.

So in answer to your question how many, that would depend on how long you stay with avast. I started using avast two years ago when it version 4.1.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free  24.8.6127 (build 24.8.9372.870) UI 1.0.818/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security
