Window ME Won't Boot
« on: April 24, 2006, 01:34:05 AM »
have a Toshiba Satellite notebook with Windows ME installed. After updating AVAST virus scan and running it, I think it deleted some of my win32 files. (At least that is what I remember zooming past my eyes.) My system restore is also gone.
Now when I boot my computer, all I get is to the Windows splash screen. I have a boot diskette, but can't even get into safe mode.  I get the safe mode logo, but no icons.
I am at a lose as to what to do. I have tried to check the microsoft site, but we all know how useless that can be. There is no wininit.ini file to delete (I also saw that on another web site), so that is not the problem.
Can anyone tell me what I can do. I am willing to re-install my windows me, but I really don't want to lose all of my data and of course I didn't back it up.  I only have the OEM windows me version on my recovery CD, and it says it will destroy all data.
Can any of you smart computer people help me out with some ideas?

Hi newcybersol,
Welcome to the forum and avast!
Please remember, avast! scans your system. It doesn't delete files unless you choose to allow it to do
so for any infected files it may find.
A safer choose is to place any infected files into the virus chest where they would be out of harms way but could be restored in the case of a false positive.
Before installing avast! did you have another anti-virus program installed on your computer?
Trying to run 2 resident AV programs is not recommended.
What error messages are you getting when you try to boot your system?

Hi Bob,
Yeah I know it is my own fault.  I shouldn't have deleted I should have chested them.  Hindsight is 20/20!
I do not get ANY error messages.  When I boot my system, I get the Toshiba splash screen, then the Windows ME splash screen, then the Windows blue splash screen.  That is where it hangs.  Nothing else happens.
I can use my ME boot diskette to get to DOS, and that is about it.  I have run regscan, and scandisk, and nothing changes.
Any other ideas that could help me out?
