Unwanted transaction
« on: August 26, 2017, 11:26:54 AM »
Good day,

I have a problem I am sure you can assist me with.
Just recently I have been charged a sum of 59,99€ for Avast software, software I have not ordered nor have I gotten any confirmation E-mail prior or after the charge has occurred.

I did notice that aside Avast Software there was an abbreviation DRI which, through a bit of research on the Internet I found out they are one of two companies who are responsible for your financial transactions with costumers, among others.
I also noticed that there were a lot of people with the same or similar problems as I have right now, being charged for a specific sum for a product they have never ordered.
After I searched my bank statements I have come across this DRI in some other transactions, software I did order and received, which makes me wonder what kind of a company are you partnering with, that takes my credit card number and randomly charges it for products I never asked for, nor allowed the transaction in the first place.
One thing about Internet shopping security is that my credit card is only charged for specific transaction. No one company that intermediates those transaction is allowed to keep any data concerning my credit card without my permission. Since I have never made an account with Digital River it begs the questions how is it possible that Digital River for Avast Company (to whom I have never given any information related to my bank account or credit card) came about my credit card information and the card verification value number?
I am actually expecting an answer from a company that offers Internet protection in all forms, that is dealing with a company like Digital River who technically steals data that was used as a one time purchase with other companies they intermediate for.

Thank you for the read and answers.

avast is using more than 2 payment processors.
Very likely you where charge because you have auto-renewal (aka continuous protection) enabled for one or more products or you had a trial of a paid version and didn't stopped it in time.

You give every company permissions to store details if you pay per credit card.
How else would a company be able to keep a record of a transaction as they must by law ?

Digital River doesn't ask people to create a account unless you want to become a customer.

Thank you Eddy for your reply.

The thing is I don't have auto renewal, I never did have Avast Premium service installed on my PC.
The other thing is that usually when a payment is processed by any company they send an E-mail confirmation of that transaction. In this case no E-mail was sent and if I didn't check regularly my statements I wouldn't notice the charge, meaning the transaction was made within the shade area of the law.
As for giving a company permission, be it as it may that by paying with a credit card I automatically give permission to store the said data that doesn't mean I allow them to charge for products I did not order via standard ordering form, or any other kind, without any kind of auto renewal service connecting my PC and DRI.

Auto renewal is pre-checked by default. You need to uncheck it if you don't want it.
There are 3 notices sent prior to the renewal. Maybe you've changed your email address but never supplied the new one to Avast ???
It's also possible that the notification may have gone to your spam folder.

Not exactly true.
It depends on the country if auto-renewal (aka continuous protection) is pre-checked by default or not.

@bob3160

That's the issue here; I have never bought Avast Premium service. I did use it before as a free service, which is long time ago, so it is kinda curious and confusing as to how exactly did this thing happened.
As for E-mail the only address I attach to my credit card purchases is my primary E-mail and I have not received nothing in any of it's folders as a notification of transaction. Not once. I did, however, received couple of mails in the last few days that did not resolve the issue but rather in a general way redirecting the issue elsewhere.

As Eddy said, it depends on the country. I can force a refund in my bank which I have to do but I really wanted to hear from somebody from the company that is supposed to protect me and shield from such things from happening.

Since I don't work for Avast, I can't answer that question. I've used their free version since 2003 and have never seen this happen.
If you've never used the paid product, you also would never have supplied them with your credit card. There isn't any way for them to charge your card unless you gave it to them. Contact Avast to request a refund https://support.avast.com/support/tickets/new?form=2

That's curious. I use Avast free for some years. To install it I was never asked to give my bank account to anybody.
You should sort out whom you gave the account information.

No matter what happened, someone must have provided Digital River with the credit card details.
Could be during buying a paid product in the past that one forgot about, a trial wasn't stopped in time etc.

Sometimes it is someone at the same household that bought something without telling the partner.
