Hello,
issue was fixed by streaming updates.
Fix is present in streaming updates "c:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\defs\17083106_stream\pkg1708310600000001.bin" and earlier.

I cannot use this (Avast Pro under Win 8.1). Nothing seems to be accessing it. There is a checkbox under updates for Virus Definitions that says, "Enable streaming updates" and I have that checked, but there isn't such a checkbox under the Program update section.

The Program update section is still telling me there is a "new" update (older version number), and it's still not letting me get it.

"c:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\defs\17083106_stream\pkg1708310600000001.bin" and earlier.

sorted, I had to enable streaming download & then the folder was there, so I then I disabled the steaming updates' & all's well again now, cheers  :)

Hi, guys, in case someone still has problems, can you report your program version, vps version and (if you know how to get it) the latest streaming update.

Such as in my case it is:
Program version: 17.6.2310
VPS version: 170831-4

The latest streaming update is:
C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\defs\17083106_stream\pkg170831060000000f.bin

Still not working for me, at least for Firefox.

Versions
Firefox: v55.0.3 32 & 64bit (fresh install), v53.0.2 32bit
Avast
Engine & Definitions: v170901-0
Program: v17.6.2310

Curiously, Waterfox & K-Meleon, which are forks from Firefox, runs smoothly. Vivaldi, which is Chromium based, also run without problem.

Whoops, is this the right thread to report browser (firefox) cannot be opened?

There is an issue with the webshield.  This is how I was able to fix it, so I could use all my internet browsers -

Open up Avast
Go to Settings
Go to Components
WebShield
Click on Customize
Unclick 'Enable HTTPS scanning'
