I am not sure what is wrong with the scanner except it say that I have broken something or trying to download an old version. I dont understand what it is try to tell me.

Let me guess by your words: You try to install a new downloaded setup or you tried to update your old version and avast said that the package is broken and you have to download it again.

To help you more, please, say what is your avast! version and which OS do you use. Can you manual update avast?

Red message came up : "Last encountered error, The package is broken".  The Avast version I am using is
Version 4.1-304.  What is an OS?  How do I perform a manual update, and is it possible if the package is broken. Please tell me what I need to do.

OS stand for Operating system examples are
Windows 95,98,ME,2000,XP
Mac OS 8.x,9.x,10.x

How do I perform a manual update, and is it possible if the package is broken.

At the skin: just click on the right icon (the one with a ray form)
On the system icon: choose update (program and/or VPS)

Isn't it simple?
